Album Notes Silver Jews: David Berman (vocals, guitar); Cassie Berman (vocals, bass instrument); Peyton Pinkerton, William Tyler (guitar); Tony Crow (keyboard); Brian Kotzur (drums). David Berman's seventh album as the Silver Jews' resident indie poet continues in the slightly more ornate, yet cleanly produced direction of its predecessor, TANGLEWOOD NUMBERS.This time, his country-saloon craft work has developed even further, particularly on an old-timey whiskey blender such as "Suffering Juxebox." LOOKOUT is also an album marked by an uncharacteristic playfulness, with songs such as "Candy Jail" containing some of his most innocent--yet still piercingly intelligent--lyrics. But it's Berman's skill as a writer of hidden melodies and unexpectedly rising choruses that brings MOUNTAIN to its peak. Standout tracks such as "Strange Victory, Strange Defeat" sound triumphantly buoyant even while Berman's guitar takes a flight of Byrdsian whimsy. LOOKOUT demands that Berman be taken seriously as a musician, but also offers a gratifying suggestion of levity and lightness.
Editorial Reviews 4 stars out of 5 -- [A] low-key treat, country-inflected folk rock goosed by melodies that conjure both the Velvet Underground and Johnny Cash. Spin
