LOOK WHAT THE ROOKIE DID is a delightful debut by a Vancouver quartet devoted to the sprightly fun of power pop. Zumpano is the drummer's last name. It sounded good, so why not use it? The album offers ten originals and a cover of Jimmy Webb's tricky "Rosecrans Boulevard." While numbers such as "Evil Black Magic" add horns, often to wonderful effect, ROOKIE is primarily a celebration of the possibilities of a guitar/drum/bass/keyboard quartet.
Zumpano's clever titles betray the poetic wordplay afoot. The playful lyrics peek in and out of rocking ensemble. This is a great first album. The musicians' enthusiasm keeps them from sounding too retro in their obvious fondness for '60s and '70s touchstones. Be sure to check out Zumpano's second album, GOIN' THROUGH CHANGES.
