Look Me in the Eye by John Elder Robison (2007)

Synopsis
John Elder Robison, the older brother of best-selling memoirist Augusten Burroughs, never felt comfortable around other humans, particularly his alcoholic father and deranged mother, and instead retreated into the comfortingly logical world of machines, eventually becoming one of the special effects technicians for the band Kiss. Robison was considered strange all his life, but it was not until middle age that he was diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome, a high-functioning form of autism that makes it difficult to pick up on social cues, and can turn the human world into a bewildering and confusing place. In his intelligent and frequently funny memoir, Robison describes the nature of his condition and wonderfully captures his peculiar but fascinating perspective on the world around him.

A PARENT'S MUST READ And KISS LOVERS TOO.

If you can get past the uncomfortable first 2 chapters you are in for a fun, informative, thought provoking piece of literature. Our son has Aspergers and is only 8. There are difficulties relating to him sometimes and it was eye opening to hear a grown man's view of life with aspergers. It was soul easying as well to know of the adventures that awaited him through his aspergers and how "normal" his life is (wife, kids, job, etc). I recomend this book to because of the recent boom in autistic diagnoses. Reading this book may help you to become less judgemental. As far as parenting an aspergers child/adult read it, enjoy it, learn from it. Now to the KISS fans, you'll be suprised to find how active this man was in KISS'S earlier years. The group called him "Ampy" and you understand why after reading. I'm glad you are looking at reading this book, it's one that you' feel would be a real loss if wasn't properly taken advantage of. Enjoy.

Favorite Book I've Read in a Long Time!!!!

I really loved this book. Well written & humorous. John Elder Robison should write another book! Very interesting to see what a person with Asperger's felt as a child but written as an adult. I've learned so much about what it feels like to be a child struggling with Asperger's and not knowing what's wrong with you. I'm a parent with a child still undiagnosed but this book is really given me a different perspective on what my son might be feeling. This book is well worth reading even if you don't have an interest in Asperger's. John Robison shares stories of growing up in a troubled family & his many adventures. I had my husband read this after I finished it & then bought it for my sister for Christmas! Ranks #1 on books that I've read in the last year!
