LONGING IN THEIR HEARTS won the 1995 Grammy Award for Best Pop Album. It was also nominated for Album Of The Year and Best Engineered Album. The title song was nominated for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, and "Love Sneakin' Up On You" was nominated for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance.

Which might make a world of difference to almost any popular artist, save for Bonnie Raitt.
Because our heroine has been drawing from the same heartland well for many years--longer than some of her more casual fans have been alive, in fact-- the casual brilliance of LONGING IN THEIR HEARTS lies in its poised tone of acceptance, in the spiritual renewal of the tried and true. LONGING IN THEIR HEARTS is Bonnie Raitt's fond farewell to her youth, but as the troubador once put it, she's younger than that now. "Can't go back to make things right/wish I'd understood/Time has made things clearer now/we did the best we could," Raitt sighs like an old time country balladeer on "Circle Dance."
LONGING IN THEIR HEARTS is about trying to age gracefully, about remembering how to live and love with the innocence of youth ("Love Sneakin' Up On You"), and learning how to sustain through trust and commitment and shared values (the title tune), even as the allure of a gypsy's life beckons. The range of musical styles Raitt chooses to express her simple truths and deep longing are as real and abiding as the bluesy earth mother growl of her voice (the closing confessional "Shadow Of Doubt" with Charlie Musselwhite), and the shivery heartstring whine of her bottleneck guitar. From yearning vocal harmonies, to taut instrumental breaks, blues, R&B, country and soul remain the bedrock of Raitt's art, her new found fame notwithstanding--these performances sound lived in, loving and alive.
