Were you Raised Catholic? This Book Is For You
Review created: 10/06/09
by:

This is the third John Grogan book I've read. Marley and Me was terrific, Bad Dogs Have More Fun, was only so-so, thus I didn't know what to expect with this book. It's an excellent book about parent child, parent adult child relationships. Anyone who reads it will enjoy it, but if you were raised Catholic, and attended Catholic schools in the 40s, 50s and 60s, or you had fundamentalist Catholic parents, the book will be even more meaningful. The rigidity of his parents, their unwavering belief in the church and its leaders is amazing. A lot of adult-child, parent conflict but totally believable. It isn't a tear jerker, it has some great humor in it, and yet is serious in its own way. I recommend it.

  Very good!

This is one of the best books I have read! I grew up in a very Irish Catholic home and was fortunate to have been educated by the IHM Sisters in grade school and The Jesuits in high school. This book brought back many wonderful memories. Once you start to read this...you will not want to put it down!!

  Better than Marley and Me.
Review created: 07/10/09

I bought it after reading Marley and Me, but it was even better than I expected. In fact I read it on the airplane going back and forth from Seattle to Norfolk. When I got off the plane, my eyes were bright red, but it wasn't because I was sad. It was because I was so appreciative of my childhood, my parents and the life I am able to live now. This book made me laugh, cry and was thought provoking. Such a beautiful memoir!

John Grogan follos up with a hilarious and poignant memoir about growing up in a strict Catholic family. Grogan was a natural scamp and mischief maker, spying on his hot neighbor and stealing sips of the sacramental wine, eventually growing apart from his parents. Finally, he realized his parents were getting old, and slowly came to understand and accept his their religious beliefs. A heartwarming tale, THE LONGEST TRIP HOME is full of humorous anecdotes and profound truths about family and love.

The Longest trip home by John Grogan
Review created: 01/27/09

The first half of this book for me was the longest trip to the decent ending in the second half of the book. I'm sure there are those who will enjoy the entire book. If your not sure if this book is for you I'd check it out at the library first and then if you want to add it to your own library go ahead and purchase one. If you read and loved Marley and Me don't expect this book to resemble that book in any way. This book begins with Grogan as a young boy and follows his life through boyhood, his first awkward sexual encounters, his college years and on into marriage, children, and the ending of his parents lives. There are touching moments as he spends time with his mother and father as their lives come to an end, but as a whole I just couldn't find any reason to reccomend this book to anyone as a great read.
