Synopsis Rickie Elliot, the sensitive orphaned hero, escapes his stunted suburban life and goes to Cambridge, where for the first time in his life he finds sympathetic friends. He makes a disastrous marriage to the petty-minded scheming Agnes, but finds his life unexpectedly enriched by the sudden appearance of a long-lost half-brother--only to meet a tragic end. Forster admitted that the character of Rickie represented himself.
