A Long Way Gone by Ishmael Beah

I am leading a book club for at risk teenagers and this book is on our list. It is important to the young people to own their own copies. They learned from this book that other young people in other parts of the world also have challenges to over come. Some of the descriptions of war were very graphic but family friendship and values were strong themes. I personally found the book hard to put down.t

I learned about this book in a magazine article written to commemorate people, such as Ishmael Beah, who have positively contributed to the African culture. I was planning a trip to Africa, & decided to learn a little about the history. This book is very easy to read & understand, & does a great job at hinting at things to come without spoiling the surprises. It gives details that made me emotional & almost unable to believe that these events actually took place in real life. The chronology of the book stays right on track accounting for Ishmael's childhood to where he is today.

This is a well-written book about a 13-yeqr-old boy recruited as a soldier in Sierra Leone. Beah writes beautifully, and fortunately this memoir has a happy ending. Recommended read.

This was a very hard book to read. Children forced into killing. Africa should really look at itself and do something to reform. There has to be someone with some sense there. I was enraged at what adults there are doing to children. It is sickening. I had to skip over some of the more gory details, but it is something that needs to be read. Africa and the Middle East need to come into the civilized world.

  the reality about life

at first, i didnt think the book would be too much to look foward to. it was just one of the many books assigned for me to read, but now i can really take in all of what i learned. we always seem to think that our lives are the worst, but if u put yourself in the place of others, you realize how different things really are in other places around the world and for the people in them.

POWERFUL BOOK ABOUT A CHILD SOLDIER
Review created: 09/20/08
by:

This was a gripping book about the experiences of a child soldier in Africa. First Mr. Beah describes his childhood, then the horrors of witnessing the slaughter of those in his and other villages, and his eventually being forced as a child to fight and kill as a soldier. The scenes describing the difficulties he faced after being rescued and placed in a rehabilitation facility were especially poignant, sad, and painful to read. Mr. Beal's difficulties in coping with his PTSD rang true for me. This book is hard to put down.

  A Long Way Gone
Review created: 08/07/08
by:

A thoughtful, reflective portrayal in the life of a child soldier from Sierra Leone. While offering some details on the violent these children endure, the book is not too graphic for the squeamish. The books resolution is a good one, which is not always the case for children involved against their will in civil war strife throughout the world.

Ishmael Beah is fighting his inner demons in this book. His experience as a boy soldier is insightful and would do the entire world some good to read. As a fellow human being (who is also the same age as Beah) I am moved by his experiences and life story.
