Album Notes The 19-minute WHERE THE LONG SHADOWS FALL is the first volume in "The Inmost Light," Current 93's 1995 trilogy inspired by Arthur Machen's short story of the same name. "Shadows" enters on the broken-Victrola loop of a mournful German lied. David Tibet recites as collaborator Steven Stapleton (Nurse With Wound) layers droning bells, bass, strummed guitar, and chorale phrases to increasingly beautiful effect. Stapleton manipulates the elements in the mix, making room for Tibet's evocative verse and the long vocal shadowing of Coil's Jhon Balance. Gorgeous in its simplicity and idyllic elegance, the piece functions as an overture to the succeeding ALL THE PRETTY LITTLE HORSES (THE INMOST LIGHT) album. Proceeds from the sale of the EP go to the estate of Louis Wain, an eccentric British artist whose whimsical paintings of cats are particularly favored by Tibet. Details from a Wain canvas ("The Old Willows") also lend their splendor of blue, purple, gold, and green to SHADOWS' sleeve art.
