Album Notes Jim O'Rourke is the benevolent patriarch of Chicago's flourishing post-rock scene. His unerring work as a producer for boundary-pushing acts like US Maple and Sonic Youth is surpassed only by his prolific and startlingly consistent solo output, which embraces everything from art-damaged indie-pop to cerebral noise rock. LONG NIGHT, which consists of two and a half hours of droning, meditative guitar work, fits firmly into the latter category. This material was recorded in 1990, shortly after O'Rourke completed his graduate studies in music, and though it is certainly a dense and uncompromising work, it is also possessed of a hypnotic beauty that ought to make it accessible to even the casual listener.
