The Cardigans-Long Gone Before Daylight
Review created: 01/03/06(updated 07/24/08)

The Cardigans' "Lomg Gone Before Daylight" features exquisite musicianship with inspired lyrics delivered by Nina Persson. Comfort, on several levels, seems to permeate this album. The songs alone are vital and comforting, the lyrcs speak of comfort sought and lost, tension, compromise and surrender. In "You're the Storm" she sings "you're the storm that I believed in/ and all this peace has been decieving." "A Good Horse' is a wide-eyed real-life confessional, stating,
"These are the Promises I can keep, to live like I must and ride with the dust in my veins, in Grace."
What comes to the front are the conflicts of human identity.
"And Then You Kissed Me" is a sad love song, vital with soft acoustic guitars and distant symbals, sublime in its simplicity "It struck me that love was a sport, so I pushed you a little bit more."
What we take from these songs are a sense of humanness.
"Blue blue black and blue red blood sticks like glue. True love is cruel love. Red blood say power fuel. sweet love tasty blood my heart overflows."
"Please Sister", is a ballad alive with cellos and bells, highly arranged, with noteworthy lyrics. "With a sampled heartbeat and a stolen soul I sold my songs to have my forture told."
"For What It's Worth" is peppy, acoustic, clean and original. Here Persson showcases her ability to sing with great poise, holding notes with enough duration to make lesser singers asphyxiate. She mixes her low and high ranges with an attitude, ever-surprising and sensual.
"Lead me Into The Night" is a heartwarming ballad, jousting again with issues of comfort and security "I ride the tide on a boat made of sand I'm sailing for another to guide me to land."
Live and Learn is upbeat with harder driving acoustics and definite attitude.
"Got kicked in the head so I started a fight cause I knew I was right but I learned I was wrong I remember a slaughter I remember I fought for the money I brought" These songs are essentially human.
I highly recommend this album. Any lyrics noted are for review purposes only and are the property of the Cardigans.
