Lonesome Dove (DVD, 2002)

Robert Duvall. The first movie I can remember seeing him in was "MASH", even though it was not his first. In this, the first in the "Robert Duvall Trilogy", he plays Gus McRae, retired Captain, Texas Rangers. Tommy Lee Jones plays Woodrow Call, also a retired Captain, Texas Rangers, Robert Ulrich is Jake and Danny Glover is Deeds. To really appreciate this movie, you have to watch "Comanche Moon". It is the prelude to "Lonesome Dove" and makes a lot of things fit into this movie. Part 2 of the trilogy is "Open Range" and part 3 is "Broken Trail". All three are Duvall Classics.

I bought this for my husband he loves it and the service was fantastic the dvd was perfect and I got exactly what I wanted. I hate cowboy movies and this one is very good

The Lonesome Dove Saga is a classic that cannot be beat. Also, Tommy Lee Jones and Robert Duvall cannot be beat. They have excellent humor, and it is very interesting to watch their unique relationship as former Texas Rangers trying to make a living being cowboys. All the actors are phenomenol! This is the most real to life cattle drive I have ever seen on the silver screen. This set is packed full of tough cowboy action with some tender touches. Truly worth it's weight in gold, all 6 hours of watching. A must for all you western fans!!

Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry is the best book or movie I have ever read or seen. I loved the book and I loved the movie. If you like the wild west this is the book for you. Augustus McCrae and Woodrow Call, two former Texas Rangers and co-owners of the Hat Creek Cattle Company, are taking care of business in their small town of Lonesome Dove, Texas, when they receive a visit from friend and former Ranger, Jake Spoon. Jake has been north to the far off land of Montana and has returned telling very appealing tales of the beauty of this vast and as yet scarcely populated region. Gus and Call decide they will load up their crew and attempt to be the first ever to drive a herd of cattle to the area. It proves to be a daunting and very dangerous endeavor and along the way they will face incredible hardships: unrelenting heat, Indians, rushing rivers, snakes, violent storms, and grasshoppers as well as the unexpected and devastating deaths of some of the members of their crew. Overall this is the story of the unique relationship between Augustus and Woodrow, who in many aspects are two very different men but nonetheless close and abiding friends. There are some truly marvelous and colorful characters in the book as well as a great deal of humor. Gus is quite a character and you will find yourself frequently laughing out loud at some of his witty comments and philosophical offerings which are so in contrast to Call's more reticent ways. Look for one especially hilarious five page description of the sign that Gus makes to advertise the Hat Creek Cattle Company, its crew and services. It is wildly funny!

My husband and I both love the movie and the cds were in excellent shape. We had recorded it from the television on a VCR tape and of course it had all of the commercials in it. Now we can sit and watch the complete movie and that is great with no interuptions.

Of all the great westerns this movie ranks in the top ten. I love the paring of Robert Duvalle and Tommy Lee Jones. They work well together. Two grizzled retired law men with an unbreakable code of right and wrong. This is an epic tale that is never boring. I bought this in dvd because I am updating my collection and replacing my vhs tapes with dvd. I would highly recommend buying this if you haven't already seen it and even if you have.

I loved this movie, because it depicts the West as it was. You fell in love with each character, and they transport you back to their time. It makes you root for the underdog, and makes you feel deeply for each character when they experience pain.
I would highly recommend this DVD for anyone who loves the Old West, and wants to see it for the way it truely was.

Excellent actors; excellent story line, and just a great family movie. I wish we could see more done today. It is refreshing to find movies without bad language we too often see today in movies, music and tv. God bless all those involved in the making of such movies as this one. Excellent!

we've been looking for the movie everywhere and its always so so expensive. this was a great price for a great movie!! :)

Great movie, great cast, If you enjoyed the Book, you will enjoy the movie, just wish more of book could have been included in movie

One of the great cowboy movies, great cast which influenced my decision to buy. Also a lot of great sceanary in this movie, lots of action and a really believable story line. I was compelled to watch again within just a few days and seen things I missed the first go around. a 5 star movie

Absolutely the best Western ever. Duval and Jones are superb. The settings have a sense of realism not found in most Westerns. The supporting actors are also well played and provide strength to the story.

Character developement second to none. I don't care how tough you are, you can't watch Gus die w/o getting choked up. Don't make movies like this!

I love this movie. I saw it on tv when it first came out. I fell in love with ALL the characters. It is an exciting trip across the wild west and full of stories about the different people. It is a don't miss movie. I have seen it probably 5 times and now that I own it will watch it over and over.
There is nothing I dislike about it.

Really enjoyed it it was very interesting and followed the theme of the recent series on Television. That is why we purchased it. It was so interesting that we also purchased the dvd return to lonesome dove and that was also very interesting and quite accurately portrayed. It was interesting to see how they had similar looking characters to the show that was recently on television.

After seeing "Comanche Moon", a recent, newly made mini series prequel to "Lonesome Dove", and enjoying it to a degree, but seeing reviews of how poorly it stood up against the original, I decided to purchase a DVD of "Lonesome Dove" to see for myself. Wow! What a finely crafted piece of work. Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones have never been better. And Diane Lane, how gorgeous is she!! Highly recommended. And I can see why the reviews for "Comanche Moon" were as they were. It doesn't begin to approach the original in any way, shape or form.

I love this older dvd and was glad to find it. Fast delivery too. thanks that is all I want to say but must write 100 characters, did that do it?

This movie is as good as it gets, not just a great western, but a excellent movie. The story has humor, drama, romance, and great acting by many of the cast.

Bought the DVD for my daughter's birthday, she just loves it. The quality of the DVD was outstanding even if it was a used item, it was just like new.

I love everything about this DVD! The quality, the movie itself! I purchased the DVD for my Father-in-law for Father's Day, so it was REALLY NEAT to see the excitement on his face! It's his and my mother-in-law's favorite movie! They introduced me to it! The vhs copy they had was totally warn out, so I love the fact that I was able to find and get this for my father-in-law!

A must have for western lovers. A great movie with great actors. Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones are awesome as well as the others. I think it is one of their best movies ever.

This movie stars two of my favorite actors: Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones. It make you feel you are part of the movie and living the slow and dusty life on the Rio Grande, and the excitement of the trailride to Montana with the spectacular landscapes and experiences. My heart aches with each tragedy and triumph. To this day, I mourn Gus McCray.

My husband & I both read the book and loved it so we wanted to see the movie. We both thought that they did and excellent job of the movie, picked perfect actors for the roles (Tommy Lee Jones & Robert Duvall, can't ask for better than that). We'd recommend it.
