Album Notes
Personnel: Christopher Franke, Richard E. Roth.
Recorded at The Royal Apollo Theatre, London, England in October 1991.
Live albums are always dicey affairs at best, where the brightest hope is the capturing of a top-notch performance and the worst aspect the annoying distraction of surly crowd noise. Franke's mastery of the studio lessens the latter's impact while providing an excellent document of the former. After the studio-bound PACIFIC COAST HIGHWAY, Franke succeeds here where most others don't. He's able to lift a performance from the mundane to the sublime--and ably record it at that.
Franke's trademark sequencer patterns are in abundance here, surreptitiously ensconced amidst the more accessible tracks from PACIFIC COAST HIGHWAY, and they offer potent evidence that he hasn't lost his compositional skills or the gift to flesh them out. Of particular interest to TD fans, THE LONDON CONCERT contains the classic piece "Cloudburst Flight," artfully mixed between the lush auspices of "Black Garden View" and the more exploratory 16+ minutes of "Purple Waves." THE LONDON CONCERT does more than act as a stopgap between studio albums; it further embellishes and improves on its original sources.
