Album Notes Pink Floyd: Syd Barrett, Roger Waters, Nick Mason, Rick Wright. Pink Floyd: Dave Gilmour, Syd Barrett, Roger Waters, Nick Mason. Recorded at Sound Techniques, London, England on January 11-12, 1967. Early tracks from Pink Floyd, originally featured on the soundtrack to the film "Tonight Let's All Make Love in London," are found on this reissue, entitled LONDON '66-'67. This is classic, primal Floyd from their first lineup, featuring original vocalist Syd Barrett. This 1967 recording provides a fascinating glimpse into the inner workings of one of the most innovative ensembles in rock history. It features Syd Barrett-era Floyd performing its barnstorming signature tune, "Interstellar Overdrive," and what sounds like an embryo version of "Set the Controls For the Heart of the Sun," from A SAUCERFUL OF SECRETS, here called "Nick's Boogie." Both songs included here are epic-length improvisatory pieces that shift from spacy ambience to full-blown freakout and back again, using very basic tools. Synthesizers hadn't come on the scene yet, so Rick Wright relies strictly on his snake-charmer organ riffs to enhance the spooky, ethereal mood. Barrett utilizes pure, acid-drenched weirdness to make the most unearthly sounds possible with very little electronic enhancement. Legions of groups would take their cue from the advances made by Pink Floyd during this time, and LONDON makes it easy to see why.
