I was a little taken back by the size and weight of the system. It's set up like a Bose with the 5 Satellite Speakers all connected to the Massive, Ottoman Sized, Sub-Woofer. The speakers can also be mounted on the wall or on the bottom of a horizontal surface. I practice my guitar with my computer and needed some good volume to hear both. This system is just what the Doctor ordered. The control head is substaintial and the volume control has a good feel and also has a full-sized system, Input-Output selection menue. Hook-Up is a breeze. The inputs for headphones and an I-Pod on the Control Head is a great feature. The system really cranks out the CD's, DVD's and I-Tunes right from the computer. The price on E-Bay was right. There is a difference in computer speakers. This is an Amplified System.
I'll tell ya, forget the Stereo Reciever and the CD-DVD player. Invest in an extra large Monitor and play everything off your computer if you have limited space with this system. This one will be tough to beat for the money. P.S., you may want to consider turning off this puppy when not in use. The Control Head does get a tad warm and has a stout straw when it comes to sucking up power. You won't be dissapointed.

The Good:
Huge power, multiple input options, remote, nice control pod. Reliability and lifespan VERY good compared to the BASH amps used in Klipsch series.

The Bad:
Overall sound quality is ok...to good, but not great. Compared to the Klipsch ultra and 4.1's, detailed midrange is lacking and high end is tinny. Warm natural sound is slightly lacking.

Overall:
Very good value in the $200-$225 range and still available new.

I have owned 4 of this systems. This is a very good system the only bad thing is that you have to calibrate the speakers every time if your using an audigy sound card which is sometimes frustrating. If its your first time owning this system and your computer has a sound card it will take you around 30min or more just to be calibrating checking the wires until the sound card can read each speaker, some times it gets 2 speakers at one time which is really frustating and for every time you get it wrong the sound is bad. Id say buy the creative 7.1 speakers with an audigy cs 2 platinum pro card. Oh yeah after a few months this things go defective from the sub or the control pot make sure you get the waranty or your ****ed. This happened to me with my first 2 systems the first one lost power to the subs and the second one was the control pod. also make sure its not refurbished.

Yea, this is a great speaker system, goes very very loud, and still I never got to peak it, the Bass is very deep, and works perfectly at those intense moments. I use this for movies, Games, and Computer. with a high quality set up, everything just works very well, nothing can compare! good mount, the wires could be longer for the rear speakers, but that is it. everything works great! I reccommend this buy to anyone, but not for a small room, this gets very loud, and you do not know until it comes to you!

Unless your a serious speaker enthusist or something, this sound system will make you so happy.
Its way easy to have multiple hookups/inputs, and to swap from stereo, x2 stereo, and 5.1
And it sounds awesome for any music.
It lasts a long time, and is LOUD!

And the control pod looks sweet, and has multiple layouts/ color schemes.
even though the default is pretty cool.

If you want the second skin, when the pod is on standby, hold all buttons except level, for 5 seconds. It will say 'second skin selected.' to switch back, just do that again.

-Hold----Hold-----Hold---------------Hold-
<input> <effect> <settings> <level> <mute>

Hope this review helps

  Logitech Z-5500 5 Speakers-MAC FRIENDLY!!!!!!!!
Review created: 11/25/08
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

For those who are hard pressed to find a 5.1 Digital system for their Powermacs and Mac Pro Towers without the use of sound cards, this is the only system to get because of 1 feature this baby has-AUDIO OPTICAL DIGITAL INPUT/OUTPUT. This is the saving grace for the G5 and believe me, I was hard pressed to find an audio card that I can have so I can enjoy what the PC people have. Yes, M-AUDIO has their Revolution 5.1 and 7.1 which are not supported by most game developers and are presently discontinued with limited support.

With the Logitech Z-5500 you don't ANY BUS card upgrades to achieve 5.1 surround sound quality. This is also the best investment in the event you want to upgrade to a new MAC G5 without the use of an audio card that may be outdated for any future systems.

On top of the Logitech Z-5500 being versatile for both systems (which is an intelligent move for Logitech), OPTICAL DIGITAL gives the cleanest sound available for your system and the fun part is that you only need one connection to your MAC. You know what they say, "less is more" and the less fuss you need to connect the better. Outside of the sub-woofer being almost the size of a mini-fridge, it gives bass that most music lovers, particularly for the Hip-Hop, House Music, and Techno fans.

If your not an audio pro but want something near what the pro's use, invest in the Logitech Z-5500. It's worth it.

  Excellent Speakers
Review created: 08/20/08
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

The clarity is unmatched. They replaced my Logitech Z4 speakers, which are 2.1, and the clarity improvement as well as the surround sound addition made these perfect. I bought a new sound card at the same time and am using an optical cable with them which adds a lot to the over all performance of the system. One problem with optical is it needs a signal to play sound. So some sounds in the beginning are delayed. An example would be turning the PC on and off. The sound when turning it off is about a 1.5 second clip and I only ever hear the end .4 seconds of it which can be a little obnoxious, but tolerable. So after all is said and done, these speakers have the quality, clarity, appearance, and price to satisfy any customer.

  Big sound! Big Base!
Review created: 12/18/09(updated 12/18/09)
by:
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

If you care about your sound quality, the richness of the deeps and the pureness of the highs and the fullness of the mids then this is the system you want! Retail it is about $420.00 US. For the money it may sound a bit much, but the sound quality is very near to BOSE quality and the functionality is very logical and simple! Once the cables are connected from the subwoofer to the satellites you can easily connect your audio source to the included digital control modual complete with IR remote and batteries included! There is a jack for an optical digital in and a coaxial RCA digital in. There are three phone jacks with included cables to connect to your 6 channel sound card. You can also connect 1-3 channel audio sources. There is a headphone jack and an auxilary jack for an iPod or other portable device. The control modual is used for volume both overall and individual speaker balancing as well as switching inputs.

This thing has serious power. 505 watts! No wonder considering the size of the subwoofer! The subwoofer will shake your house guaranteed! It is very large for a computer system. The subwoofer is about 15"x16"x20". It is large! If you want a smaller system and can sacrifice a bit of power I would go with a Creative product or on of Logitech's "lesser" models. This thing may be too much for some people. If you can afford it I would ultimately recomend a BOSE system because they tend to be slightly smaller and they have great computer speakers. But if you are slightly less into spending the money but what serious power with awesome quality go for this system.

My complaint: the base is huge for a computer system, and there are no stands for the rear speakers. You have to either mount them on a wall with the attached small desktop stand or place them on a shelf that is behind you.

I bought these speakers a few years ago. They sound great. The bass is awesome. The price is right. I got them on Amazon for a great price. The only problem is that they didn't last very long. I called Logitech and they had me send them the control panel and sent me a whole new system. That one didn't last very long either. I think the control panel goes bad. I was too lazy to call Logitech the second time and didn't know if they would replace them again anyway.

Excellent for games and movies, not the best for music
Review created: 07/17/09
by:
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

A very amazing surround sound system for games and movies. However, for more critical listening such as music playback or recording, this set up is not ideal. With movies and games, the audio is moving around so much that speaker location is not overly important. With music playback, all 6 speakers need to each be in their own perfect "sweet spot". The front, center and rear satellite speakers need to be at just the proper heights and distance from where you are sitting to really balance everything out. Logitech claims you can put the subwoofer on either side of the listener, based on the theory that the bass frequencies will fill the room. In reality, if you have the sub on one side of you, music sounds very lop-sided and unbalanced. The sub needs to be in front of you or behind you, not on one side, regardless of what the Logitech manual says. To get music playback to sound really nice from any surround set-up, be prepared to have your system completely dominate the room it is in, meaning that your furniture and furnishings have to be planned around your system. The final drawback with music playback is the mid frequencies are seriously lacking. The bass is strong, as is the highs but to my ears music played back on this system sounds as if there is a giant notch filter blocking out all of the mids, which may be ok for modern music, but terrible for anything recorded before the mid 90's. If you are looking for this system for gaming or watching movies, GO FOR IT ! You won't be sorry. However, if you are wanting only to listen to music, particulary classical or rock , stay away from this setup and buy a pair of powered stereo reference monitors instead.

Quality large speaker set, plenty of power! A++
Review created: 05/07/09(updated 06/08/09)
by:
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This is a great speaker set, it can get fairly loud without any boost settings, and looks great. The bass is huge, it has been said it is as big as an ottoman, you should get the picture...
The smaller speakers are very heavy for their size, so they are harder to knock over and such, and the bass probably weighs 30-40lbs, which makes it something to move around...
The control pod it also nice and hefty, and is a little taller than the side and rear speakers. The buttons and adjuster is very nice on the control pod, it is pretty well laid out.
Has plenty of connection options, you can hook up your HDTV via the digital connection, thats a nice option.

I was a little disappointed at first at this system, as it didn't seem to be able to get "that much" louder than my previous G51 150w Logitech 5.1 system. I had them both connected to a great Asus Xonar sound card, and boosted everything and fine tuned it in the Xonar control panel in Windows. It just didn't get much louder at max volume than the G51, and I was especially disappointed at the subwoofer, it wasn't too much louder than the G51s, the G51s' sub can really be loud!
I finally figured out that it has some special boost settings built into the control pod!
There are two different boost settings, each go to 11, so put together you get a boost of 22db over the regular maximum volume. Each boost is a sound increase of 1db.
To get the first boost you keep turning the volume control knob, it takes about a half-turn then you see the screen display the boost numbers.
Once you have boosted that, you can further boost the system by holding the mute button and turning the volume knob about a half-turn, then you will see the other 11 boosts being added to the volume you had.
So you can use a little boost with the mute button all the time if you wanted, I find that useful if you are using a laptop or an CD player input where you don't have a control panel to boost the speakers, it keeps them as loud as if they were plugged into a professional PC setup...
There are some more interesting little features that the control pod has that you might not know about, just google it!
I'm really enjoying the speakers now, the little speakers are ear-splittingly impressive, they can get really really high pitched sounds very loud, and the bass is well matched to them.
The bass in my experienced cannot be boosted too far above the center, side, and surround speakers, so to get a lot of volume out of the bass everything has to be turned up a lot, and the little speakers are extremely loud.
Great system, it'll take a lot of beating, and has enough power with the boost for anybody that isn't totally deaf. It will shake your walls and play the tunes clearly while doing so.
The bass's cooling fins get really hot after being used for a while, be careful when turning it up a lot, I would probably put a fan on it to keep the heat off...
Great system, definitely recommend it to anybody that has room, wants clarity and power for about $200-$300.
I understand that the Z-2300s are basically the same system with the same bass(actually an 8" version of this bass, same wattage) so for about $150, that'd be a great system for a lot of power, and the bass would definitely be very powerful with the two little speakers.

Logitech Z-5500 5 Speakers as a multichannel guitar amp
Review created: 03/30/09

What can I say I have bought 3 of these units. They are reasonable price wise, and you have 2 Stereo Channels for Guitar & Synth and a Sub-Woffer for clear Bass with Center Channel for your Stage Monitor. 1000 Watts Peak. I hate luging Amps around so I just bough one for my primary locations. ie. Mexico, Southern Calif. and Nothern Calif.

I have high power stereo systems in four different rooms in my house. Each system has multiple amplifiers and anywhere from two to eight 15" sub-woofers. I like power. This Logitech Z-5500 system really makes my computer sound great. It was easy to setup and is easy to operate. The real acid test is would I buy it again? And my answer is absolutely!

Logitech Z-5500, best speakers 4 the $, friggin' rock
Review created: 12/15/09

I bought my first set of Z-5500's for use as computer speakers, and immediately turned around and forked over more hard-earned dough to buy another Z5500 speaker system to hook up to my PS3 in the bedroom. For the money, these are the best speakers you can get. Loud as all get out, but crystal clear THX-certified and plenty of tight bass from the 188W powered 10" sub, action movies feel like you're in the thick of it. 500 something Watts (RMS) total, 188W of it going to the sub, and around 62W RMS per speaker. They retail for $400, but sound quality is on par with my brand new Klipsch tower and center channel speakers and Pioneer receiver I just bought for R1500. I actually just bought two more (just the speakers) to replace my rear speakers in my Klipsch system, is how much i like them. Can't say enough good things about them...

  Most bang for your buck
Review created: 12/09/09
by:

I bought two Z5500 sattelites after my Z2300 ones died on me, and connected them to the Z2300 system. Light-years away from any other PC system, with good response on almost all frequencies. The system offers heavy base for everyone who appreciates this, but the phase plug speakers respond very well to mids and highs as well. The best option for this price area, and certainly the best PC system out there. If compared to more expensive studio monitors or more expensive options like Klipsch, Bose, Bang and Olufsen, there is a clear difference in quality, but given the price for this system, it gets the most bang for your buck.
