Remote is good, but Logitech support is not.

I have 6 Logitech Harmony remotes and I have to say all have been great to use. The software is cumbersome, but once you get the hang of it and gone through it a couple of times setup is a cinch.

The reason I give the Harmony 890 an average has little to do with the remote and more to do with Logitech customer service. If you look at forums that cover the Harmony 890, you will quickly see that these remotes are prone to defects, especially with the LCD and the keypad. The problem with this is Logitech will not replace these remote (after the 1 year warranty), nor offers a repair option.

My experience was my remote was 17 months when the LCD failed. I called Logitech and was told by a tech that there has been quite a few LCD failures, but since it was out of the warranty period that they could not replace and do not offer a repair option. Instead what they did offer was 50% of my next remote order from Logitech, which would still cost $150 after the discount.

So to sum it up the real issue is Logitech is aware there is a common problem with the LCDs and keypads failing, but do not stand by their product enough to say we know we have a problem and we are going to make it right.

I love this remote! I now have every piece of electronics hidden in my living room! It is the best. Took me about an hour to log into the logitech site, input my electronics info, and get everything up and running. It works flawless now and I love it! TV, DVR, Surround Sound, DVD, and VCR! Love it!

The Best Remote For Form And Function
Review created: 12/26/08
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I've owned the 880, Harmony One & the Harmony 1000. While the 1000 looks like the winner it's terrible for function for us channel surfers and fast forward tivo hounds.

The One is a nice touchscreen remote with flair but lacks the RF as well as the 880 is a solid feel but lacks the RF.

The 890 is my favorite and now I own two of these remote systems including Z-Wave devices throughout the house. These 890s feel great in your hand full backlight and the RF feature is the cherry on top.

Logitech owners will be familiar with the software for 890 owners you not only update the 890 remote by the RF extender. Later production models have the RF extender with detachable power supply so you can easily unhook the extender and bring over to your computer to sync your stuff up.

Z-Wave devices are also fully controlled and you can create scenes tied to activities. For example in the layman terms. Activity Starts called, WATCH TV at the same time you have a Scene to where all lights turn on and dim to 50%. You map the scene to the activity. Hit Watch TV and Lights, TV and Action!

Note: Hitting the off button won't automatically turn off the lights, for that just hit "ACTIVITY" then "RF CONTROL" and "ALL LIGHTS OFF" Bam! Done.

For those of us that previous used X-10 and think ZWave is about the same. We are dead wrong, I am dead wrong, I was dead wrong. Z-Wave is supreme to that X-10 stuff. Z-wave knows it's own ON/OFF State so you don't have to worry about getting out of sync with RF commands being sent.

In closing, I'm sure there are more expensive remotes out there. BUT from the experience of: Playing XBOX, Watching DVDs, Having a TIVOHD with additional space and recording everything. The remote is a pretty important thing. This solves all my needs and wants. As a Bonus my wife finds it easy to use as well. :)

If you want to hide your components and put a flat screen on the wall, this is the way to go.With the new flat screen up and the components hardwired, we needed a way to use a remote control without having to leave a closet door open and using three remotes. This is the way to go. But ye of tech savvy better line up someone to help.

This is the third Harmony remote I have owned and I have had extremely good luck with them. I don't change remotes because they break, I just upgrade to the next step.

Logitech advertised it like there is nothing else better than this. Screen to small, and again was made out more than what it really is.

Excellent Remote - Set-up is a little difficult
Review created: 11/02/08
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This remote does exactly what it is designed to do. I needed a remote that could control my HD entertainment center that was located in an enclosed AV closet. My equipment could not be controlled with a traditional IR remote because they did not have a direct line of sight of the remote. The Harmony 890 is both a IR and radio controlled remote. The radio wave controller can go through walls and to distance of 100' feet away.

The controller requires a PC to setup and program the controller. Programing is a little difficult but not terribly complicated. The tech support is great and they will help with any issue.

Works just as expected. Web based programming is a piece of cake, and it's easy to upgrade from another Harmony model to the RF unit. There is little delay from pressing the button to action. Works just as you'd expect a Harmony remote to work. Highly recommend.

First I debated on buying the new Harmony one, but because it is not RF capable I decided to go with the Harmony 890 and I am glad I did. So far, I have been very pleased with all of the features that come with this remote. It's very easy to program the remote through your computer and the customization of the remote is excellent. Instead of having 7 different remotes I not have one!

  Logitech Harmony Remote

I love the power this remote has as well as the intelligence it shows. Set up was a breeze. You can not find an easier remote to set up. Basically you answer a few questions and it does the leg work for you. I also like if you press to activate your home entertainment unit and something does not respond to the commands of the remote simply press help and it solves the issue with no more the 1 or 2 buttons pressed. I also like how it activates when you pick it up. Sort of like a motion detector. The only con of the remote i do not like would be the design. I do not like the very small buttons that are to close together you can not read the button labels themselves (not the LCD part) unless you have superman vision. LCD is fine to read and the charger is a nother good plus as well as the option for both IR and RF frequencies. Hope this helps and enjoy your New Logitech Harmny 890 Remote Control!

The last truly universal "green" remote
Review created: 12/14/09
by:

This remote is one of the few "universal" remotes that can be used to set up a truly "green" home entertainment system in a very easy intuitive way. . What makes it unique is it's ability to control Z wave devices sucha as wall outlets, wall switches and dimmers. Having that ability the 890 and 890 Pro allows you to eliminate the "vampire" standby power that so much home entertainment equipment uses. As your system sits idle for up to 16 hours of time a day the DVD player, large screen TV, AV reciever, cable box suck killowatts of power year after year. Replace the wall outlet with a $25 Z wave outlet and you can eliminate standby power completely. The 890 allows you to program the Z wave device to be on or off at the touch of a button.

Unfortunately, Logitech no longer supports the Z wave devices on there newer remotes such as the 900 or others. With the price of Z wave devices droppingin in half over the last couple of years you think it would be just the opposite, but that is not the case.

The Harmony 890 + wireless extender works flawlessly.
Review created: 12/13/09(updated 12/13/09)
by:

It may be an outdated model but that doesn't mean it's outdated. I replaced a harmony 670 that died due to slobber from my 1 year old, lol. I do miss the button layout of the 670 but absolutely love the abilities of the 890. I didn't think I would ever need an extender but after I got the remote I purchased a cabinet with doors and put all my hardware in it, I put 4 120mm fans in it to keep everything cool, so everything is nice and hidden from my son. Having everything hidden in a cabinet makes the living room look less cluttered too.

I really think this remote is better than the touch screen models Logitech sells now. My brother has a harmony one and says the touch screen is easily triggered by accident. That's not to say the buttons are not easily pressed on the 890 but I think the feedback of a button is better than having to look at the touch screen to make sure you are selecting the correct function. I put the most used commands on the buttons at the 4 corners of the display.

Like with every harmony remote they do take some time to program and tweak.

remote is good.. but a pain to update remote
Review created: 12/04/09
by:

I like the remote overall but it took me two whole days to get the setting rights on the remote.. I have an LCD TV and a hometheater system and I had a tough time getting the settings transfer over from the software to remote... not sure if it is the software o hardware problem.. after conecting the remote to the computer via USB it recognizes th remote but in the middle of updating the remote it will lose connection and say remote is connected though it is connected.. then I had to start the remote in safe mode and try again.. had to do this multiple imes to get it working but it is a major pain.. I hope logitech can do something about it.. once I got all the settings transferred, i dont want to update again because I do not want to go through the pain agin..

  Exactly what i wanted
Review created: 12/03/09

i don't have an overly elaborate home theater system, however, its all in the hall closet. I had tried and IR repeater only to find out that my TV spreads some much interference that it won't allow it to work. This remote did exactly what i wanted without have to run wires all over the place. the software was easy to use and it worked perfectly the first time i used it. Get this remote considering it was 350+ dollars when it came out.

  My Second 890!!
Review created: 11/28/09
by:

This is my second 890. I have one in the downstairs rec-room and this newly purchased one is for our bed room. Love Harmony remotes - this is an older model but works great. With the RF extender it is truly one of the best universal remotes around. Easy setup with a PC - could not see using any other universal remote.

  only partially functional
Review created: 11/28/09

shipped fast - which is a plus on their part... but the product arrived and it is only partially functional - which is a huge negative. I purchased the Harmony remote to replace my 3 year old Harmony that recently started having problems with the buttons. The new product arrived with the same problems that my 3 year old harmony was having - the buttons don't work! Mind you, its not all of them - but a few of the pretty important ones like the "guide", "enter", and the "yes" button for the help menu (which can't be reset to another key). I loved the Harmony remote when it worked - but so far i am 2 for 2 where these 880/890 models have non-functional buttons... and given their price - this level of quality is just outrageous. (In all my years, I've never had a product-specific remote control malfunction - not even for the cheap off-brand products.) Apparently with Harmony you gamble that your new purchase won't be functional - but even then, there appears to be a planned obsolescence that will require you to buy a new remote every few years even when you get an initially functioning product. (And from the other reviews - you'll surely notice that mine is not the only complaint of this nature.)
Hopefully there will be another competitor who will enter the market with this type of unit - otherwise Harmony will continue to have a monopoly and will never fix their quality issues (3 years and counting and they still haven't resolved the button issues).

  Harmony 890 Remote
Review created: 11/27/09
by:

The Harmony 890 is a very user friendly remote. Easily programable. Up to date for codes. Help is a great feature on it. The RF extender is a must have. No paring of the remote and extender, which is nice. Wish the buttons on the remote were a little bigger. I sometimes miss the button I am going for. Over all a good remote. Glad I got rid of the pile of other remotes.

Great Remote. Setup is a bit challenging with connecting to the computer and navigating the screens to setup each remote. However, after you get the remote setup and the cable boxes/DVD players and associated remotes out of site, the whole thing is worth it.
