Remote is good, but Logitech support is not.

I have 6 Logitech Harmony remotes and I have to say all have been great to use. The software is cumbersome, but once you get the hang of it and gone through it a couple of times setup is a cinch.

The reason I give the Harmony 890 an average has little to do with the remote and more to do with Logitech customer service. If you look at forums that cover the Harmony 890, you will quickly see that these remotes are prone to defects, especially with the LCD and the keypad. The problem with this is Logitech will not replace these remote (after the 1 year warranty), nor offers a repair option.

My experience was my remote was 17 months when the LCD failed. I called Logitech and was told by a tech that there has been quite a few LCD failures, but since it was out of the warranty period that they could not replace and do not offer a repair option. Instead what they did offer was 50% of my next remote order from Logitech, which would still cost $150 after the discount.

So to sum it up the real issue is Logitech is aware there is a common problem with the LCDs and keypads failing, but do not stand by their product enough to say we know we have a problem and we are going to make it right.

I love this remote! I now have every piece of electronics hidden in my living room! It is the best. Took me about an hour to log into the logitech site, input my electronics info, and get everything up and running. It works flawless now and I love it! TV, DVR, Surround Sound, DVD, and VCR! Love it!

The Best Remote For Form And Function
Review created: 12/26/08
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I've owned the 880, Harmony One & the Harmony 1000. While the 1000 looks like the winner it's terrible for function for us channel surfers and fast forward tivo hounds.

The One is a nice touchscreen remote with flair but lacks the RF as well as the 880 is a solid feel but lacks the RF.

The 890 is my favorite and now I own two of these remote systems including Z-Wave devices throughout the house. These 890s feel great in your hand full backlight and the RF feature is the cherry on top.

Logitech owners will be familiar with the software for 890 owners you not only update the 890 remote by the RF extender. Later production models have the RF extender with detachable power supply so you can easily unhook the extender and bring over to your computer to sync your stuff up.

Z-Wave devices are also fully controlled and you can create scenes tied to activities. For example in the layman terms. Activity Starts called, WATCH TV at the same time you have a Scene to where all lights turn on and dim to 50%. You map the scene to the activity. Hit Watch TV and Lights, TV and Action!

Note: Hitting the off button won't automatically turn off the lights, for that just hit "ACTIVITY" then "RF CONTROL" and "ALL LIGHTS OFF" Bam! Done.

For those of us that previous used X-10 and think ZWave is about the same. We are dead wrong, I am dead wrong, I was dead wrong. Z-Wave is supreme to that X-10 stuff. Z-wave knows it's own ON/OFF State so you don't have to worry about getting out of sync with RF commands being sent.

In closing, I'm sure there are more expensive remotes out there. BUT from the experience of: Playing XBOX, Watching DVDs, Having a TIVOHD with additional space and recording everything. The remote is a pretty important thing. This solves all my needs and wants. As a Bonus my wife finds it easy to use as well. :)

If you want to hide your components and put a flat screen on the wall, this is the way to go.With the new flat screen up and the components hardwired, we needed a way to use a remote control without having to leave a closet door open and using three remotes. This is the way to go. But ye of tech savvy better line up someone to help.

This is the third Harmony remote I have owned and I have had extremely good luck with them. I don't change remotes because they break, I just upgrade to the next step.

Logitech advertised it like there is nothing else better than this. Screen to small, and again was made out more than what it really is.

Excellent Remote - Set-up is a little difficult
Review created: 11/02/08
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This remote does exactly what it is designed to do. I needed a remote that could control my HD entertainment center that was located in an enclosed AV closet. My equipment could not be controlled with a traditional IR remote because they did not have a direct line of sight of the remote. The Harmony 890 is both a IR and radio controlled remote. The radio wave controller can go through walls and to distance of 100' feet away.

The controller requires a PC to setup and program the controller. Programing is a little difficult but not terribly complicated. The tech support is great and they will help with any issue.

Works just as expected. Web based programming is a piece of cake, and it's easy to upgrade from another Harmony model to the RF unit. There is little delay from pressing the button to action. Works just as you'd expect a Harmony remote to work. Highly recommend.

First I debated on buying the new Harmony one, but because it is not RF capable I decided to go with the Harmony 890 and I am glad I did. So far, I have been very pleased with all of the features that come with this remote. It's very easy to program the remote through your computer and the customization of the remote is excellent. Instead of having 7 different remotes I not have one!

I love the power this remote has as well as the intelligence it shows. Set up was a breeze. You can not find an easier remote to set up. Basically you answer a few questions and it does the leg work for you. I also like if you press to activate your home entertainment unit and something does not respond to the commands of the remote simply press help and it solves the issue with no more the 1 or 2 buttons pressed. I also like how it activates when you pick it up. Sort of like a motion detector. The only con of the remote i do not like would be the design. I do not like the very small buttons that are to close together you can not read the button labels themselves (not the LCD part) unless you have superman vision. LCD is fine to read and the charger is a nother good plus as well as the option for both IR and RF frequencies. Hope this helps and enjoy your New Logitech Harmny 890 Remote Control!

Great Remote. Setup is a bit challenging with connecting to the computer and navigating the screens to setup each remote. However, after you get the remote setup and the cable boxes/DVD players and associated remotes out of site, the whole thing is worth it.

  Best remote ever have.
Review created: 11/13/09

Do your self a favor and put all the remotes aside and get a Harmony 890 remote. You can program every device on your home theater. Requires a computer to set up from which you can select functions as watch TV or DVD, ect. turning the devices you want on fine tuning to which input and so on to prorperly tune your viewing preferences with a push of one button. Also have two old devices that only work with the original remotes, the 890 pick them up without any problems. Fully controlled my home theater from the 890. Having two zone receiver the 890 gave me the option to controll the AV receiver from my second zone (bed room) with the RF extender.

CONS. Requires a computer to set up. Hunter remote fan not working with the 890 try everything from teaching the remote to finding the codes without positive results yet. I will continue trying until work or exhaust all the options.

great remote, i dont know if u could do much better
Review created: 11/09/09

i really like the fact that it comes with a charging cradle and when you set the remote down after 3-4 seconds it turns off and then as soon as you pick it back up it is ready for action. The software would be a little difficult for non-tech savy people. Me on the other hand i had no problem i found the learn function to be a life saver.

the only thing that i could even think about saying negative is that the rf extender ir controllers almost make you place this big sticky thing on top of the ir receiver. all in all a great buy

RF extender is a must if you desire a to be freed or IR technology. Easy setup and I like the fact that updates are available. Haven't even had to reset the remote once and have owned it for almost 9 months. You must be comfortable with technology but doesn't take a genius to figure this on out. Buttons are somewhat cumbersome but functionality of the 890 is impressive.

Review created: 10/10/09

We have been using the remote for about 2 weeks, the delay was we were setting up new equipment so we waited until everything was ready to be installed. A little complicated for the novice like myself, but to have gotten rid of all the remotes placing stuff be hind closed doors. was worth it, of course that's what its all about. It does it! We are pretty familiar with it now and It does everything it says it does. I highly recommend the item. But if you cannot set it up by your self make sure you get someone that is cpu and electronic technical, to help you believe me you will enjoy it if it is set up correctly. We're happy we found the item and recommend it to people.

  Great Remote
Review created: 09/25/09

I wanted a remote that would be able to control everything in my home. I found the right one with the Harmony 890. It was easy to set up and with the rechargeable battery I don't have to worry about flying through AA's. The product delivers exactly what it claims.

The only downside is the high price, but if you have that many things with remote controls you probably have the money for this remote. Great product.

Great Remote at a Great Price!
Review created: 08/17/09

Im already familiar with Logitech remotes and how well they work. I needed this as a replacement to a broken remote control of mine. I charged it up out of the box and logged into the software and click on replace remote and it was working within about 30 mins after making some minor changes to my programming.

Logitech Harmony 890 LCD Remote Control
Review created: 08/10/09

I needed one remote control to turn on my Bose 321 GSX home theatre system and my Philips TV as the Bose remote control was not programmed to sync the two units as the older Bose system did not acceipt newer Philips model code. The Hamony was able to do this, and a lot more, by being able to control all of my systems using remote control. The single Logitech Harmony remote control is able to download all of the newer model codes for the remote controls, and as a result it can control the older as well as newer models. The LCD screen makes controlling the systems very easy and intuitive once the system for the unit is learned.

  Good Remote
Review created: 08/04/09(updated 08/04/09)

This definitely beats having 4-5 remotes lying around. Although I found that some specific settings, eg. for my Marantz AV receiver has to be done using the Marantz remote since the Harmony apparently doesn't support them. Need to look into this further.
