I LOVE universal remotes that can be customized. My first was a Philips Pronto PSU-2000. Love the large touch-screen and fully customizable "everything". The tough part was getting all my "latest and greatest" gadgets to work with it. Macros; you need a PhD in Rocket Science to figure those out. When I got wind of Logitech's acquisition of Harmony, I was excited. The cost for the remote was a bit high so I passed on them. After procrastinating for 3 years I finally decided to buy one to experiment with.

I really didn't need a large graphically enhanced remote anymore. I wanted simplicity. So, instead of going to the model 880, I decided to go with an earlier model. It was also cheaper. I chose the Harmony 520 because it can store up to 15 devices and it matches all my Sony equipment. Programming was so easy a Caveman could do it. The remote is FAST and responsive. There is a built in motion sensor to detect when the remote is picked up and will make all the keys glow. This is great for saving batteries. The best part is Logitech keeps their database very updated. Each time you plug in the USB to the remote and update any changes, it will search for new firmware for the remote and new codes for the devices stored on the remote. They have a massive inventory of codes and I doubt if you'd have trouble finding the the most obscure make/model of a device.

So my first Harmony 520 cost me $40 here on eBay. I've purchased 5 so far and my average price has been around $40. So, it's a great buy for a fantastic remote. You can spend less by buying a "refurb" model but you screw yourself with only a 90 day warranty. A new remote gives you a full 1 year warranty.

Logitech also has a user forum board. It's filled with Logitech Techs, enthusiasts and guys like me who just need a little help and guidance. It's free to join and there is a wealth of knowledge to be found there.

*Update* After about a month of using this remote I still love it. I do notice somethings that I don't like, but it's a matter of personal preference. After awhile, some of the rubber buttons require you to press down much harder to activate. Also, the fixes volume/channel buttons "click" very loudly and they have kinda sunk down into the remote a bit, so it's no longer flush with the bezel. All in all, still a fine remote for the price. I paid an average of $45 each for the 5 remotes. I can't find a quality generic universal remote for that price! Kudos to Logitech!

This is a very well designed and well thought out
remote control unit, with integral software.
I purchased it to automate switching through the dozen
inputs on a Hi Def TV, since only 2 are ever used on my set-
the cable box and the DVD, and this was too much for my sister
to handle manually. It performed this task
accurately, and the LCD display makes choosing the task
(called an activity) that you with to perform easy to find.
The component list is extremely comprehensive, with the data
probably being constantly updated on the company's website
for transparent download to the software and controller.
I needed to contact support to find out
how to rename one of the tasks (activities) to a name better
suited for my purpose, and found the support person
knowledgeable, and professional.

Logitech Harmoney 520 awesome remote, but has its flaws
Review created: 12/04/08

Logitech's Harmony 520 LCD universal remote is one of the cleanest and sturdiest aftermarket remotes on the market. If anyone is familiar with Logitech, then they know that when buying one of their products you are paying for a quality item. I have yet to be disappointed with Logitech so far on anything that I have purchased, but enough about them, let's review the Harmony 520.

Pros: The Harmony 520 remote is extremely sturdy. You can feel buy the weight that the build quality is very good in this item. The lcd is sharp, then blue backlighting is bright. Setup was basic and easy step by step instructions that came on the cd. The buttons are clearly labeled, sturdy, and extremely responsive.

Cons: Everything has its flaws, the software is one of them. ALthough setup was easy, you need a computer to beable to setup the remote. The remote has so many different functions that a novice user could get lost in the sea of options that the Harmony 520 offers. The features can either be your saving grace or your achillies heel. The lcd menu does take a little time to get use to before you will be completely comfortable controling all of your entertainment devices.

Conclusion: I paid $40 shipped for this item. It was worth every penny. It has features that I haven't even bothered to touch yet. The best feature I have found is the Xbox 360 power function, it not only turns on your Xbox 360, but it also automatically switches your TV to the correct video input to run the system. Awesome product, a must have for any tech savy person.

The best remote on the market!

I have owned one for several years and I have been singing its praise ever since. This remote took the place of 5 remotes for my home theater system. It is very easy to set up via the internet. Just go to web site and put your model# and answer a couple of questions. Then it downloads right into the remote!

Just push one button like "watch TV" automatically turns on all the components and sets them to the correct setting. This one remote controls all the features to each necessary component according to the set up. example: the volume on your A/V system or the change the channel on your cable box.
And if you want to watch a DVD just click the button "watch DVD".

This a great remote - very easy to use and very dependable. It is the best remote for the price. Put your old remotes away for an emergency and get this one and relax.

I got this remote on ebay for a great price and you should be able to as well. Set up is a little cumbersome but the overall performance is easily worth the money. The buttons are a little small for my digits but the lcd is helpful. Everything works well and all of my systems are supported. I even have it set up to work on 3 of my televisions. I would definitely recommend this remote to anyone on a budget who loves to own the newest technology.

We absolutely LOVE this remote. It simplifies a lot of complex systems, and makes it easy for me to actually watch TV! Sometimes it will "forget" its activities and we'll have to turn everything off and on again, but it's super easy to use.

This remote works great for controlling multiple devices at the same time. It is great to be able to push one button and have multiple things turn on at the same time. The programming part of it was a little tricky, I had to turn off my ant-virus, my fire-wall and my router and just have the internet connected directly to the computer I was using. After doing to, setup was a breeze. The remote will occasionally forget certain commands but when you click the help button it will fix it for you. I am not jumping for joy for this remote, the build is questionable, feels pretty cheap but if the price you pay for it is right (less than 60$), then I would highly recommend it.

I really like the Logitech remotes. I saw this at a very good price and after researching it, decided to buy it. The price was excellent. This replaces all the individual remotes for all the devices. Love it!

The harmony remote is in a class by itself. It's smart, remembers what devices are powered on, knows the difference between hitting "video4" for the four device, or by hitting "input/channel" then "input select" 4 times to get there.
It is programed by USB, logitech has a huge database, and can be "learned" for the rare device that isn't in their database. Their learning software is incredibly user friendly; for example, teach it 0, 1 and 2 and it'll figure out the rest of the number keys.

The downside is their software is geared for idiots and is user hostile to anybody who isn't an idiot. Going to the upper left to select radio buttons, and down to the bottom right to click "next/continue/getonwithit!" is enough to make programing a new remote require carpet tunnel surgery. It's nice to use a laptop to program the remote in the same room as the entertainment system, but you'd better use an external mouse or book a room at the hospital for surgery!
My memory of their software still makes me wince.

The only thing I don't like about the remote is the number buttons. They are so SMALL that I have trouble using them and I have small fingers. I can't imagine how a man could use them.

  My experience with this remote.....
Review created: 12/10/09

....has me somewhat in a tizzie! The support team at Logitech has been great with plenty of kudos for their persistence. They have called me on 2 separate occasions to help me with the setup of the remote. The second is for a level 2 technician who will guide me through the next call. The unit seems to have all the features I want, but have not completed the process of the setup. None the less, since the support is so very helpful, I would say to a potential customer, buy from Logitech....the experience is incredibly helpful. Several years of Logitech products says, Excellent!

  Incredible Remote!!
Review created: 12/07/09

I have owned several Harmony remotes and even purchased one for my elderly father who was getting confused with all the different remotes h had to use. I purchased this one to replace my Harmony 880, that after so many years, the most frequently used buttons got worn out!! I will continue to buy and recommend any of the Harmony line if remotes. Just pick the one that suits your needs and also the design that you like the most.

Remote was broken and the seller doesn't want new one.
Review created: 11/30/09

Purchased a universal remote from Sean McDonald (Ebay ID sean.951)on Nov 1st 2009. Even though the item was supposed to be sealed, the seller put the batteries in the remote, incorrectly. The corrosive liquid from within the batteries leaked out into the remote, thus ruining it. I shipped the remote back to the seller (costing me $11).
Even though the seller received the returned remote on Monday, Nov. 23rd (confirmed via USPS.com - tracking# 03061070000152766165) the seller has yet to ship out a new item nor has he refunded my additional shipping cost, for returning the item. I have opened a dispute with Paypal in the attempt to be refunded.
I STRONGLY suggest not purchasing a remote from Sean McDonald (Ebay ID sean.951)as he may attempt to pull the same crap on you.

I had this remote for slightly over a year and it went dead. Logitech would not service it. Logitech offered no reason for why the unit went dead after such a short period of time. They offered me a discount on a new one but would not stand behind their product which was just barely out of warranty.

Loved the easy setup. Bear in mind you have to have pretty standard equipment, no off the wall junkets. Need a good PC to connect to Harmony for the installs but it was a snap. Sony HDTV, Sony DVDRW VHS Combo, PS3, Kenwood receiver, DirectV all worked flawlessly. Threw away the remotes from the end tables. Wife now loves me more, point and press.

  Harmony among my various components.
Review created: 10/08/09

I put four remote controls in a box and removed the clutter from my coffee table. Now one remote does it all. The online programming was intuitive and the remote self diagnosed and fixed whatever small problems occurred the first time I used it. The 520 and 550 models are a lot more attractive than the dog bone shapes of some of the other Harmony remotes.

Incredible remote, turned 6 into 1!!!!!
Review created: 09/27/09

This remote turned my *6* remotes that were needed to control my home theater system into ONE remote that does it ALL, quickly and easily! Programming was incredibly simple using the included software, and every label and activity can be customized for your particular needs! 5 out of 5 easily, and the price I got it for was amazing. I've seen this same remote in stores for $99.99. I didn't even pay HALF of that. You won't be sorry with this remote. Whatever commands it does not have in its EXTENSIVE database, it can learn from your factory remotes. Simply amazing!

  Good replacement, cheap from china
Review created: 08/26/09
by:

The remote is great because it does virtually everything the other remotes do, for brands you'd never think would work, 12 devices and easy set up macro routines to allow you to get down to what you want in one button, and then control multiple device functions smartly, ie volume is controlled to stereo or tv but channels etc control cbl/sat rec

I bought this remote because i couldn't find a replacement OEM remote for my Yamaha 5.1 receiver. and compatible remotes cost from 1.5 to 2x what i paid for this total. it does all the stuff the original remote did, which can't all be done from front panel of course. however you have to translate the buttons in the manual to what the harmony actually looks like, but i was able to do what i needed with speaker and input advanced settings

downsides are it doesn't control UHF remote devices and that the buttons have a physical clicking sound like a keyboard or mouse, instead of a soft press like most remotes, page up/down are missing in easy reach, which sucks because i'm addicted to them for sat tv guide. but i just got it today, i'm sure i can toggle it a bit. I also would've liked to get basic common devices to work without using USB and software/internet connection.

  Universal Remote
Review created: 07/31/09
by:

Took me about 20 minutes to do the initial programming. Make sure you have all of your equipment Make and Model information. The IR learning mode is slow but reliable if your equipment is not listed. This thing runs my home theater great including screen, projector, surround sound, DVD, VHS, Sattelite Receiver, etc. I've gone from 5 remotes to 1 and most functions require only one press of a button. Not too bad! This product would have gotten an "excellent" except for one con. -- While doing your programming you must be on an active internet connection. I think the software should run offline even if at a slightly reduced capability. I'm sure there are some functions that could work without a constant connection to the web.
