Country superstar Tim McGraw surely needs no apologists; the Louisiana-born singer, who's racked up millions of record sales and married country diva Faith Hill, is practically a force of nature. However, there is a misconception of McGraw as just a high-gloss hat act, a notion that a close listen to LIVE LIKE YOU WERE DYING should dispel.
For one thing, while almost all of his peers record with the same pool of Nashville studio hotshots, McGraw continues to work with his longtime band, the Dancehall Doctors. Additionally, progressive-country cult heroes Bruce Robison and Rodney Crowell are among the songwriters tapped for material here. Most importantly, at a time when most mainstream country artists are compelled to pander to their audience by maintaining a "don't worry, be happy" attitude, McGraw isn't afraid to journey into darker emotional territory, often with no clear way out--see the heartbreaking "Blank Sheet of Paper," and "Open Season on My Heart." The latter song is surely one of the most powerful pieces to be found on a circa-2004 hit country album, and even though Crowell penned it (with James T. Slater), you can thank Tim McGraw for bringing it to the light of day.

[T]he album comes down on the right side of chest-thumping versus heart-baring... - Grade: B

Yet another Good Tim McGraw CD

Add this to your collection, although I don't think a lot of these songs will make it on his next greatest hits CD. You still should buy it just for the title song Live Like You Were Dying.

Hey waiter, there's pop in my country!

Even though Tim had a hit single that spoke negatively about putting pop music into country (while at the same time having a hit single with hip-hop rapper Nelly), Tim is decidedly pop-country. Some people whine and complain about this to no end. Why? If there can be all different kinds of rock (i.e. classic, alternative, hard, grunge, Indie) why can't there be different kinds of country. If everyone sounded like Alan Jackson, they'd complain about that too. Tim's a talented singer and this is a great album. It's one of his best and I own all of 'em.

I knew when I first heard this album that there were going to be several mainstream country hits. But I think some of my favorite songs will never make it to radio. For instance, "Something's Broken" a love gone wrong song with a clever hook at the end, and "Old Town New" another love gone wrong song. My take on it is a guy wishes he could change the same ol' same ol' about his home town because everything reminds him of her.

The whole album isn't just country love songs, though. The track "Kill Myself" is about a person who wants to change his life and all his horrible ways and the only way he can do that is to kill his old self. And I fully enjoyed Tim's version of "Can't Tell Me Nothin'" which was also recorded by Nashville Star Brad Cotter. You'll have to buy the album and listen for yourself to find more good'uns.
