Album Notes Count Basie & His Orchestra: Count Basie (piano); Bobby Plater, Danny Turner (alto saxophone); Eric Dixon (tenor saxophone, flute); Kenny Hing (tenor saxophone); Charlie Fowlkes (baritone saxophone); Waymon Reed, Pete Minger, Sonny Cohn, Noran Smith Jr. (trumpet); Mel Wanzo, Bill Hughes, Dennis Wilson, Alonzo Wesley Jr. (trombone); Freddie Greene (guitar); John Clayton (bass); Butch Miles (drums). Recorded at Shimin Kaikan (Public Hall), Hamamatsu City, Japan on May 21, 1978. Includes liner notes by Masashi Imamura. Digitally remastered by Joe Tarantino (Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California). This album documents the later years of this legendary band leader/pianist's career. By 1978, The Count no longer had trombonist Al Grey and tenor man Jimmy Forrest as star soloists; however, while fewer "famous" musicians appear here, this ensemble of mostly unknown players more than proves its worth, swinging with panache. The opener "The Heat's On" is an uptempo burner that features one of Basie's finest drummers, Butch Miles. Other classic arrangements (and tunes) featured on this outing include "All of Me," "Things Ain't What They Used to Be," "Shiny Stockings," and the swing anthem "Jumpin' at the Woodside." A superb set of music that also includes, interestingly enough, the rare example of a Basie funk chart.
