Album Notes
As recordings of Bob Dylan's performances from the '60s and '70s continue to see excavation, remastering, and release, it seems as though the stream of official and unofficial Dylan "bootlegs" might flow forever. The miraculous thing is that nearly every new release plays like a revelation, and LIVE AT THE GASLIGHT 1962 is no exception. A crystal-clear snapshot of Dylan at the dawn of his career, GASLIGHT was recorded the same year as Dylan's debut album and finds him strikingly assured as a vocalist, interpreter, and songwriter.
Greenwich Village's Gaslight was the hot spot of the emerging folk scene of the early '60s, and Dylan--young, eager, and newly arrived in the city--captures the excitement of the milieu, so that the recording shimmers like a historical timepiece. But more impressive are the performances--presented with stunningly crisp, intimate sound--which find Dylan giving his distinctive spin to traditional folk numbers "The Cuckoo" and "Barbara Allen" and trying out early drafts of "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall" and "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right" (featuring alternate verses), and the lesser-known original "Rocks and Gravel." Dylan's voice--a combination of Northern nasal snarl, high lonesome hillbilly twang, and something utterly unique--already has the sound of a performer poised to make history.

Editorial Reviews
LIVE AT THE GASLIGHT isn't just ancient history. It holds its own as some fine music from the early days of America's most important songwriter.
