Album Notes
LIVE! BOOTLEG has been digitally remastered using Sony's 20-Bit Digital Super Bit Mapping process. This release includes new deluxe packaging with original release liner notes, photos and artwork.
Aerosmith: Steven Tyler (vocals, piano); Joe Perry, Brad Whitford (guitar); Tom Hamilton (bass); Joey Kramer (drums).
Additional personnel: David Woodford (saxophone); Mark Radice (keyboards, background vocals).
Engineers: Lee DeCarlo, Jack Douglas, Jay Messina.
Recorded live between 1973 and 1978.
In addition to being one of the greatest American hard rock bands of the '70s (Kiss being the other one), Aerosmith developed a reputation as one of the fiercest live acts thanks to a grueling tour schedule. Inspired by the countless unauthorized live recordings circulating at the time, the band put out LIVE: BOOTLEG, a collection of performances recorded between 1977 and 1978, in addition to a pair of early cuts from a 1973 WBCN simulcast.
Unlike many live albums that of this time period that were overdubbed and doctored, BOOTLEG is Aerosmith at its rawest. "Back in the Saddle" and "Toys in the Attic" contain plenty of ragged guitar playing. Despite the sub-par sound quality, the tracks triumph nonetheless thanks to the primal vibe generated by the band's chemistry. Yes, hits like "Walk This Way" and "Dream On" are included, but the true gems are oft-overlooked nuggets like "Chip Away the Stone," "Mama Kin," and an uncredited "Draw the Line" that overflow with Aerosmith's trademark sass and attitude. James Brown's "Mother Popcorn" and the blues classic "I Ain't Got You" (originally done by the Yardbirds), not only show the band's range, but its love of black music.

One of my Favorite Live Recordings
    Review created: 04/25/08

If you like Raw Live performances you'll love this CD. This rough, tough and rowdy live album brings together 14 recordings from Aerosmith's 1977-78 tour. You may not enjoy every song but there are more than enough songs that kick ass. This is a great live album that was never messed with in the studio. If you want to hear an old school 70's show at it's rowdiest this is it. Of course it's not perfect, it's not supposed to be, a true live performance.

      what a masterpiece!!
    Review created: 08/05/07

Even though this is recorded during the heydays of their drug use, this is some of their Intimate recordings.Especially, the recording of the Beatles song "Come Together".Even though the liner notes says that"We kept this gig so secret, nobody showed up but us"(Waltham, Ma.)That is where I was raised and myself and friends use to hang out outside the "Wherehouse"One night in particular,Steven Tyler came out of the building(with a boombox over his shoulder and danced his way over to me and my friends and said "Hail-Hail the gangs all here"!!On another occasion,Joe Perry came out and jumped into his Porsche, and It wouldn't start. So, me and my friends gave him a push so he could jumpstart the car.

This is excellent, raw, live, real Aerosmith. It doesn't get any better than this. This live recording includes some of Aerosmith's greatest hits while including some of their most brilliant songs, that for one reason or another went unnoticed in the mainstream. This is edgy. You get a clear picture of why Aerosmith, fronted by the Toxic Twins, Tyler and Perry, rose to stardom!

Live Aerosmith Doesn't Get Any Better Than This

    Pros:
raw as hell, and I want more dammit!

    Cons:
a couple of off performances, sound not the greatest at times

There are two types of Aerosmith fans: those who love the band's old, 70s blues infused rock and roll stuff, and those who prefer their more calculated pop rock catalog that began with 1987's Permanent Vacation, and continued right up through 2001's Just Push Play (the band's 2004 covers album, Honkin' on Bobo, doesn't really fit into either, despite it's "back to our roots" claims...that being said, it kicks a*s, and is highly recommended). Not many people can sit there and say they don't have a preference of the old Aero or the new Aero. Some might sit there and be diplomatic and say they...

This Aerosmith live album is truly south of sanity (Aerosmith w/o)

    Pros:
Every great Aerosmith song in their rawest in-concert incarnations.

    Cons:
Well, just a couple tiny qualms with the performances.

INTRODUCTION Hello, everybody. This is John Bishop typing, the DeadMilkboy of Epinions.com. Before I launch into the following review, I d like to mention that this is part of a series of reviews I m writing based on one of the greatest American rock n roll bands in history, AEROSMITH! I d like to thank Aerocat (another Arizona native, bless her soul) for giving me the chance to do something other than write reviews of classic B-movies and current CD/DVD releases, and besides AEROSMITH F*CKING ROCKS! Posted here is the URL to Aerocat s official Epinions.com Aerosmith Write-Off page, and a...

Get your head out of the loo
    Review created: 05/05/03
    by: ninelives353 -- a member of Epinions

    Pros:
Contains all the well-known classics and some rare covers.

    Cons:
Some of the performance is downright poor.

Live Bootleg was a tongue-in-cheek effort to beat the bootleggers at their own game. The cover was decidedly amateur looking and came complete with a lovely coffee mug stain. Very good. Musically, it is absolutely crammed to bursting with classics. The performances here come from a period when Aerosmith were visibly exhausted and suffering the effects of prolonged alcohol and drug abuse. It is fair to say that things don't really sound as polished as they should for the most part. 'Back in the Saddle' is stormingly good and leads straight into the familiar 'Sweet Emotion' chords. The latter...

      Aero in your face!
    Review created: 06/22/01
    by: mans_daddy -- a member of Epinions

    Pros:
Captures the essence of Aerosmith live perfectly

    Cons:
Sound quality and performance a bit TOO ragged at times. Track selection questionable

Aerosmith Live Bootleg was originally released as a double LP in late 1979. Contained here are 16 live performances mostly dating from their 1977 and 1978 US tours. By this point in time, Smith had climbed to the top of the rock tree (in America at least), on the strength of a string of superb, straight ahead heavy rock albums and their relentless touring schedule. Sadly, success gave the boys the facility to indulge in their other great love apart from music that s right, rock n roll excess. This resulted in heightened inter band tensions, and even worse, a rapid downturn in the quality of...

Well, it's not really a bootleg...
    Review created: 12/30/99
by: SirAlex -- a member of Epinions

    Pros:
Great song selection really reflects Aerosmith's uniqueness

    Cons:
The sound quality isn't always perfect, Tyler and Perry don't give their usual awesome performances

Edited 3-26-00 (Steven Tyler s 52nd birthday) After five albums, Aerosmith's struggles in the studio were increasing. There was also a growing rift between Joe Perry and Steven Tyler. The band's ceaseless touring caused them to have difficulties sparking the creativity for new songs. The album Draw the Line was released much later than expected because of Tyler's difficulty with writing new lyrics. Since it was obvious that the band needed a break and was not going to complete an album for 1978, this double LP was released. The band members did not want the album to sound like every other...
