Album Notes
Personnel: Roy Book Binder (vocals, guitar); Jorma Kaukonen (guitar).
Recorded live at Another Fools Cafe, Athens, Ohio in 1993.
This live solo record accomplishes the near-impossible by accurately presenting an artist doing what he does best, in a way that exceeds what would be possible in a recording studio. From the outset of this spring night in Athens, Ohio in 1993, Bookbinder has the audience on his side, and with good reason. His picking is crisp and relaxed, his typically conversational singing has the enthusiasm of someone thoroughly enjoying himself, and his storytelling is flawless.
The record's highlight is in fact one of these stories, a ten minute talking blues version of "Candy Man" in which Bookbinder recounts his early days learning from his mentors, Reverend Gary Davis and Pink Anderson. The guest appearance by Jorma Kaukenen on second acoustic guitar is unspectacular--he doesn't detract, he just doesn't change the chemistry in any significant way with his electric guitar-esque solos. After his two duets with Kaukenen, Book Binder resumes pulling out tunes from his earlier recordings and drawing on familiar influences like Davis, Bo Carter and Jimmie Rodgers. The release, in addition to being an excellent portrait of a gifted entertainer at work, is just plain fun.
