A Rare Gem

This movie is a treat to watch. The acting is great, with spot-on performances by Steve Carrell, Toni Collette, and Greg Kinnear, as well as the lesser-known actors who steal quite a few of the scenes.
My family might have been mildly dysfunctional, but this on-screen clan puts every family I know to shame. There are the parents - one an unemployed hopeful author of motivational/self-help books, the other an overworked mother with little support from the rest of the family; the children - one having taken a vow of silence until he can get into the Air Force Academy, and the other an "ugly duckling" turned beauty queen; the outspoken, heroin-snorting grandpa, who is always ready to tell the family how he feels; and, best of all, Steve Carrell as the homosexual university professor who attempted suicide because he was spurned by another Proust scholar.
You put this group together in a barely-working van and head them off on a road trip, you have what amounts to National Lampoon's "Vacation" with a bunch of escaped mental patients playing the Griswalds. I don't want to ruin the fun, but anything you could imagine going wrong on a road trip does. But the beauty of this film is that, no matter how much they can't stand each other, the family always pithes in during a time of crisis and gets themselves out of a jam. It makes you want to phone mom.
Very highly recommended, though you might want to pre-screen if you have young children.
