Disney movies are timeless, whimsical stories that will never go out of fashion and will live to entertain generation after generation!
The Little Mermaid is no exception to this rule. 2006 sees the release of this new, remastered version of their 1989 theatrical hit. In a 2 DVD format, this has brighter, more vibrant film footage which only adds to the delight of this film, coupled with extras that the initial pressing did not include - such as the story behind the Little Mermaid, which of course was loosely adapted from a Hans Christian Anderson tale, or a astounding virtual under the sea adventure!!Of course, the real appeal is in the actual tale itself, which tells a story of mermaid Ariel and her wish to become human! In order to achieve her dream , she bargains with the sea witch - Ursula (Disney really created a grotesque horrid character in Ursula which may be a little too intense for the younger viewer) - but of course, things are really not that simple and she finds herself battling for what she really has!!
This movie stands out for two main reasons - the incredible and vibrant graphics, probably amoung the best of the Disney Movies; and the songs - they help capture the mood of the film, tell the story and I would bet that even those who are not familiar with the movie will certainly know some of the songs such as "Under the Sea".
This is a movie the whole family will love and a worthy addition to your Disney Movie collection!

One of the Best Disney Films Ever!

The Little Mermaid (Disney, 2006)

One of the Best Disney Films Ever! It's most likely in everybodies Top-5.

The Little Mermaid is a timeless story of Girl meets Boy, Girl falls in love with Boy, Girl wants to be with boy but has fins so Girl cannot be with Boy, and so on.

You've most likely already seen the movie so you know what's great about it, but if you haven't some of the hilights include: Some of the best Original Songs in any Disney Movie (Under the Sea, Kiss the Girl, Part of Your World), the Supporting cast (Sebastian, Flounder, the Bird), and Ariel (Very Attractive for a Half Fish/Half Girl, Full Cartoon Character)

The Bonus features on the DVD are awesome as well. With games, music videos, and a sing-along option there is enough extras to keep you busy for hours.

If you have Children, a Significant Other, or a Heart you'll love this DVD.

I give the Little Mermaid a 5/5

PLEASE VOTE IF YOU FIND THIS REVIEW HELPFUL. Thank you.

Splendid and Effortless Looking Realization of Perfecti
Review created: 10/15/06

Disney's 1989 animated film THE LITTLE MERMAID is a very formidable movie, surpassing the combined visual and musical artistic talents of all concerned. Character development is one of the strong points of THE LITTLE MERMAID achieved through concise dialogue, music and simplistic yet effective images. However, most effective to the success of this film are the songs that advance the story line and define the characters. That was the brilliance of lyricist Howard Ashman's contribution to THE LITTLE MERMAID. He and composer Alan Menken developed songs that in several minutes clearly define Ariel's reckless but innocent curiosity about the humans above and her yearning to discover that world. Every song in THE LITTLE MERMAID bolsters the depth of the characters, advances the plot or enhances the significance of a scene in addition to being very melodic and well written. So in THE LITTLE MERMAID we are given a substantial amount of information and entertainment in a minimum amount of time. There is not a single frame of wasted footage in this film. The combined effort is one of a splendid and effortless looking perfect creation of a classical animated Disney tale.

My daughter really loves Ariel. This is a wonderful movie. I even watch it. We sing the songs together and its quite a nice bonding time. My daughter has had to be Ariel for halloween the last 3 years.

I am sure everyone knows the story so I won't bore you with that part. But I truly recommend it for your child. It would make a great Birthday or Christmas present.

Music Is Way Too Darn Good....

Music Is Way Too Darn Good.... I keep humming or singing the songs from the movie for days after every time we watch this!

Not as bad as at Disneyland where THAT song keeps running thru your head after riding THAT boat ride.... hopefully I won't start humming it now!

Anyway... this is a really good animated movie, and as you can see from our eBay store, we sell comics, comic books, cartoons, & comic related items, so we know what we like!

Hope you like this one too!

Recommended!

I have seen this movie and as far as Disney movies go, it is alright. But to see children watch it, its amazing. Kids love it and I think that is what its all about. The Disney films are great for families and children. A person never has to worry about certain content when watching them with children. Its great peace of mind.

Disney wasted their talent with this one!
Review created: 11/02/06
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I call myself "positve feedback" but I'm just going to have to step out of bounds with this one. I've had to deal with a lot of dumb girls in college, and trust me, Ariel is as bad as they come, and for some reason most girls want to be her. Yes, the Disney company did a great job with the music and animation, but they wasted their talent. The protagonist is a bozo. I think if they thawed out old Walt today he'd be very disappointed in this character. Parents, ask yourself, "is this how we want our daughters to turn out?"

We'll set aside the psychological effects that are produced on girls when bodies, such as Ariel's, are portrayed immodestly in our media and create an unrealistic norm. Let's just discuss Ariel's character. All the marketing promos are describing Ariel as "headstrong" . . . ha! She's downright disobedient and immature. People, don't let the marketing and even the popularity of this movie suck you in. Ariel was irresponsible. She was so involved with herself that she missed the concert. And she "loved" Eric so much that she just had to make a deal with the evil sea witch. What Ariel did was really only a step away from prostitution. Should our daughters believe that its OK to do whatever it takes to get what they want now? I thought patience was a virtue. Even in the end, after she had disobeyed her father and caused so much trouble, he still gave her what she wanted. (I thought gods were wise, the god of the sea must not be). What does that tell us? That we can cry and moan all we want until we get what want. Last I checked you can only do that when you're buying something. And the worst part of all, she actually didn't even speak to Eric until the very end when they were battling the sea witch. That's not real love.

If you want a good movie, pick Beauty and the Beast. Oh man! Or shall I say WO-MAN! Now there is a woman who's character can affect a positive change in this world. Belle recognized that Gaston just wasn't dating material (Ariel was more like the three idiot blondes that Gaston only used for cuddle buddies). Belle was willing to sacrifice herself to save her father's life, a true act of love that began the Beast's conversion (you can see it in his face). Belle was also intelligent; she loved to read. So lets see it all you ladies that are lookin' for love. Are you going to be like the idiot Ariel or the Beautiful Belle?

I think Fiona (Shrek 2) had it just right, lets throw Ariel back in the sea.

PS. I'm sure many who are reading are saying that this is "only a movie", but if that were true, then why can every girl sing Ariel's song WORD for WORD. Can you honestly argue that something that is so embedded in our minds doesn't affect us?

Hi bought the dvd today when it first came out(10-3-06)It was a great dvd it has special features and deleted material. It is truly a whole lot better than the other grainy little mermaid version. Like I said it has special features and includes a very old theatrical trailer that I've never seen before. The dvd has interviews with Jodi Benson which are great! The only thing I could say to be wrong is Disney did not include the music video of Jodi Benson singing Part Of Your World and also some trailers weren't included. Other than that it was AMAZING. You can TRULY enter the world of The Little Mermaid and go Under The Sea like never before with this DVD.

This is one of my favoite disney master pieces. My iece and I watch it all the time. This is a classic example of why disney is so great, while many of there more recent movies have been disipointing from an adults entertainment and artistic veiw, this and many other classic titles are just so beautifully done, You MUST see this film...

My girls (4 and 3) absolutely loves this movie. I recommend it with a bit of caution because Arial is a not a great influence. She is mean to her friends and disobeys her father. Like all Disney G rated movies it has many up sides but parents should discuss the downsides of the characters with their children. Enjoy a very good movie with your kids, but don't miss out on the teachable moments.

In my opinion, this is the best movie ever created by Disney. Even before my dayghter, my wife and I watched this DVD several times. The story brings laugh, and tears... Don't waste your money on the version II of this film, they didn't kept the quality, but this one you MUST TO HAVE, even if you do not have kids.

The music in this wonderfully presented animated feature is dreamlike and wonderful. Ariel a strong willed "teenage" mermaid ventures into a world beyond her realm. The lovely written comparison of the under the sea world and the land above is magical in itself.
One of my all time favorites.

This is truly a classic Disney movie. It has all of the elements to keep my kids watching it over, and over, and over, and over...you get the picture.
It has fun songs, fun characters (it's hilarious hearing my 2 year old try to copy the bird's gargling part in Kiss the Girl.), and a decent story.
The 2 year old is a bit scared in a couple of parts, but quickly forgets them and loves the show.
This is a 'must have' movie for the serious Disney collector.

If i could rate this with a negative, i would. This is the worst example of what a little girl should be looking at. The plot is pointless, and it gives girls the view that they should just look for a good looking guy, and become thin to the point of annorexia. POINTLESS.

Best Disney Film Gets Royal Treatment!
Review created: 09/20/06(updated 10/04/06)
1 of 3 people found this review helpful.

The story of a mermaid who wishes she could be human (the whole grass is greener thing) so she makes a bargain with a sea witch to become human in exchange for her voice (the Faust element). Ariel risks everything to become human so she can be with her prince but Ursula the sea witch does not leave anything to chance.

The Little Mermaid is one of the best Disney animated films - Beauty and the Beast is the only one that can rival it for the #1 spot. Beautiful animation, great story and great voice talents. This was back in the day when you did not have to be a movie star to lend your voice to a Disney movie. Which, I think, is one of the things I miss about Disney films. Not only are their films done on computers but movie star do the voices - and that is all you can see, the actor doing the voice, not the character.

Highly recommended, this 2 disc edition has tons of extras. Deleted scenes, making of featurette, "Kiss the Girl" video, games plus the remastered the print and sound. Not necessary to get the 2 disc edition to enjoy the film, but it is the only one in stores right now - and once they sell out Disney will not release it again for 10 years.
