Synopsis In this consideration of an American institution and how it has changed, Charles Euchner looks at Little League through the window of the 2005 World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. Euchner is intelligent and probing, not nostalgic and cranky, and he is careful to credit the adults who are there for their kids. But, he says, the game has been corporatized, with big bucks at stake and huge pressure on the teams. He also sees adults who are over-involved and children who are over-programmed--and the simple joys and lessons of sandlot play have been lost. Along the way, Euchner conveys a love of the game, as well as providing some good Little League facts and stats, which sports lovers always appreciate.
