Album Notes Yo La Tengo: Ira Kaplan (vocals, guitar); Georgia Hubley (vocals, drums); James McNew (bass). Additional personnel: Al Perkins (pedal steel). Together for over a decade, the Hoboken, NJ trio of Ira Kaplan, Georgia Hubley, and James McNew really hit their stride in the late '90s. Here's an EP of covers to follow up the acclaimed I CAN FEEL THE HEART BEATING AS ONE. Yo La Tengo recorded an entire album of covers, FAKEBOOK, in 1990, and have always peppered their live shows and releases with some wonderfully obscure cover selections. On the title track, which originally appeared on I CAN HEAR THE HEART, they put the Beach Boys chestnut through the grinder, almost sounding like the Jesus and Mary Chain in the process. "Be Thankful for What You Got" is a slow samba celebrating life's simple joys. Long-lost L.A. punk legends the Urinals and country rock icon Gram Parsons also turn up ("Black Hole" and "How Much I've Lied"), as do perennial Ira and Georgia favorites the Kinks and Sandy Denny. Perhaps the most notable feature of this EP is the wonderful harmony vocals, which are more prominent in the mix than ever before. There's also a bonus live version of "Little Honda," a cameo by NRBQ's Al Perkins, and a special mystery track. All in all, a neat little package from one of indie rock's preeminent bands.
