Linksys WRT54GS Wireless Router

Even though this WAS the best SOHO Router out on the market (Small office/Home office)Linksys cut down the quality of their manufacturing parts when they joined forces with CISCO. CISCO was realizing that a lot of large business were using these very small cheap linksys routers instead of spending a boatload on CISCO hardware. Their solution: they made the new Linksys routers come with less RAM and a different CPU and chipset. Most users wouldn't know this, it isn't on the box, it isn't on their website, but it IS inside everyone of the new routers. The chipset is now not a linux based, so people who want to have their own firmware can't do that any longer. On top of that, the RAM was decreased. This decrease in RAM made one problem... slower connection.

You might want to do some research about this Linksys if you plan on doing any firmware hacking or are trying to tweak your network to the max. BUT, this router is GREAT for home users, however I would not recommend it for business with more than 4 computers, but I would recommend Linksys's WRT54GL, all the hardware of the old Linksys WRT54G's in a new, more expensive, box.

Also, this SPEED BOOSTER version has a little bit more memory than the WRT54G brother, but requires a SPEED BOOSTER NIC / Wireless Card (but still not more memory than older versions)

This was the 1st router I've ever owned. I had to get support on the phone to set it up at first, which their support was wonderful. I got to speak to a man in India that had a great sense of humor. Other than that, I've had it now for almost a year now and have had no problem with it what so ever since the day I plugged it and got it set up. I have to say this is an exceptional product and would recommend to anyone looking for a wireless router.

Pro: Unit works, great for average home user. Warranty service is not a problem, tech support above average.

Con: I had two units fail, both during warranty. These were running original OEM software. Could not go a week without having to reboot either unit, as they would lock up.

I still keep one around as a backup unit, although I have NEVER had to use it since switching to Buffalo routers.

It does the job perfectly, no complaints here. I did some research and this was one of the highest recommened routers, and it is great

I've been using linksys routers for about 8 years. It is very reliable and any trouble with it is very easy to solve.

Everything was easy to set up. Connected within minutes from my laptop to my home computer that i had the router connected to. No hassels at all. I love it!!

Our old Linksys wireless Router went kaput after about 3 years. While we had that one, we did have to re-boot it every couple of days, which was a pain.

When we installed this one on our computer, it set itself up and found the I.D. number we were using before, but ignored everything else, so we had to dig around in the wireless set up to poke in a couple of numbers. We also have a router across the street and hanging in a tree to get the signal down to our little beach house... and this had to be reset, as it did not recognize the new router. This would have been a piece of cake, but our nephew did the original climbing up the tree... easy peasy for a 30 year-old. My sweetie had to don his climbing gear to go way out on this side-ways Madrona, and then up about 20 feet. I couldn't watch.

At any rate, he hauled the second one out of the tree, reset it, and all is well with reception down at the beach house. I will say, that my sweetie threw a line over said tree and raised the second router up as if it were hanging on a flag pole. When it goes kaput, he merely need lower it, not climb up the tree again. By the way, that second router is not exposed to the elements, but is in an old tuperware container, which works great, for those of you who need a second router which needs to be outside.

Also, we have not had to reboot this new router at all... seems to be working just dandy.

I love that i can now use the internet anywhere in and out of my house without having to plug in the ethernet cable. Shipping was very prompt. Very good product.

The router had one of it's antena pulled off I don't know if the shipping company did that or the seller, but the router had an update firm version that I was going to install on it so it save me the time to do that.

I bought the Lynsys router two weeks ago and was immediately impressed with the number of features available on this inexpensive machine. The size is perfect for placing anywhere. I'd recommend the router if you're on a budget.

The router has been working just fine. My Xboxs, Direct TV receivers and my computers all get online with no problems.

I liked the way the Linksys Router looks. It's quite stylish, and most of all it works. If you have a lap top computer it's a great tool to use with wireless internet. I would recommend this product for your wireless needs.

I use the wireless router to extend the internet in my house to every room so that I can use my laptop in my room without coming to the living room. It has helped me to achieve a lot with my productions.
