This Bigger then life album, Like A Prayer, paraded Madonna full force into the global marketplace with a million dollar plus paycheck for a Pepsi commercial, a burning cross stigmata video with interracial love and a crazy Lilly Munster hairdo. All this makes you wonder if Madonna is an artist or just Madonna Inc., with a new model released every year.
The songs are more pop sensations with little meaning, just the way we like them. The songs become overshadowed by Madonna's ability to lose touch with reality. Crotch grabbing, religious blasphemy and other over zealous self-worship made Madonna an even bigger contender. Her 4th album of all new songs was said to be in need of some prayers when it was released but Madonna proved everyone wrong again- she was still no new flavor of the month. In fact she was the hottest artist around and she was only getting bigger. The songs that exemplify that on this album are Express Yourself, Like A Prayer and Keep it Together.
Memories of Like Prayer are better than the real thing. It doesn't hold up well today but back in 1989, we could't wait for it's release. The album smelled like patchouli when you bought it and Madonna's face was no where to be seen on the cover, which said alot about her already iconic status. Who knew that this album was an end of an era for Madonna? She has remained topical ever since but this was her peak, she jumped the shark and she supposedly never looked back.
