Album Notes Includes rare 12" dance remixes previously unavailable on CD. Personnel: Madonna (vocals); Nile Rodgers (guitar, Synclavier); Lenny Pickett (saxophone); Rob Sabino (synthesizer); Bernard Edwards (bass); Tony Thompson (drums); Jimmy Bralower (programming); Curtis King, Frank Simms, George Simms, Brenda King (background vocals). Digitally remastered by Ted Jensen (Sterling Sound, New York, New York). The title track, which, combined with her overt sexuality, caused waves of controversy at the time, has now become part of movie folklore, with director Quentin Tarantino letting his brutish cast mull over the meaning of its lyrics for the opening sequence of the film Reservoir Dogs. It is somehow gratifying that the Madonna album that unleashed her on the world should have become a cultural icon and reference point for the 80s. A telling blend of lush pop songs and street suss--the dancing went on all through the night. The British import CD (SIRE 925181-2) contains 1 extra track "Into The Groove" from the "Desperately Seeking Susan" soundtrack and has a running time of 43:22. Then, in 1984, her second album, Like A Virgin, was released, and she became a superstar. Who doesn t know the mega-hit title track or "Material Girl," even 20 years after this CD s release? Unfortunately, even though Like A Virgin is still one of her biggest sellers, there are some problems with it. First of all, there s not much of a change in her material; most of these songs could easily have been on her debut. With the exception of the gorgeous Love Don t Live Here Anymore, all of the songs are dance-pop. Cons: At times slightly dated, at other times TERRIBLY dated. While the fact is that critics love Madonna more now than when she was first starting out, I fail to understand why. I mean, she s just not exciting anymore. Since her career redefining album Ray of Light , her music has been on a steady downward slope. The whole Britney/Christina lesbo action thing was a publicity stunt that smacked of desperation as much as Janet s tittiegate fiasco (wow, that was two years ago. Time for me to stop talking about it, eh?). And the fact is, when your current music finds you trying to recreate the music you made at the beginning of your career, doesn t it make. Review ID: 10000000000224949 Review created: 04/09/07 by: starcollector-- a member of Epinions and Top Reviewer in Music Pros: The hits are fine Cons: There's a lot of banal filler in here (Disclaimer: Those looking for a brief description of the album will find what their looking for in the "Album Overview" section. The section titled "Detailed Track Discussion" is meant only for those who want to read detailed descriptions of the songs, and they do not constitute the essence of this review. Lastly and most importantly, this review is not necessarily written by the point of view of a Madonna fan.) Introduction: This is where Madonna gets all serious. Why don't you just shoot me? However, while recently hearing them both again, I have to say that her second album is slightly better than her first. Of course, my opinion could reverse itself the next time I play them back to back, but for the time being I prefer this effort which concentrates less on the dance tracks in favour of ear-pleasing pop tunes. Almost as much as for the title track, 1984's Like a Virgin is famous, or perhaps infamous, for the. Several memorable songs that helped define an era. Cons: Several pointless filler tracks. Some tinny production, and it's less cohesive than her debut. Madonna's sophomore effort, there s plenty of calculation at work here after the unexpected success of Madonna , the singer made sure to capitalize. Out with the funky disco pet, in with the determined harlot; plenty of outside songwriters to provide the hits, and of course, a couple of controversial tunes guaranteed to get tongues wagging and the publicity machine stirring. Despite the disappointing proliferation of outside writers, their material is at least decent - in fact, the weaker links are mostly the Madonna-penned songs. Lead single Like A Virgin is hopelessly eighties, but it s... Review ID: 10000000002760037 Epinions.com ratings are not included in the item's average rating.
