Madonna's exquisite sense of the pop song, and suitably stylish aesthetic to match, was pushed to the hilt for 1989's LIKE A PRAYER. Sporting a bare midriff and a stylishly dark bob, she immediately set the Moral Majority up in arms with the title track's video, depicting, among other things, a black Christ and a hillside of burning crosses. The song, however, was as strong and as dazzling as the images. Before deciding on utilizing a constant barrage of public sexuality over songs, Madonna made great records. Highlights here include the sexy bubble-gum of "Cherish" and the delightful "Express Yourself." Great pop to go. Madonna is very talented in everything! Review ID: 10000000001451050 Was this review helpful? Report this review Reviews Review created: 05/30/08 by: I am of the baby boomer age and I have enjoyed Madonna's music for 25 years or longer. I remember when I first bought this it was a vinyl record. I couldn't resist buying it now in cd. I do love her music from the 80s and 90s the best, although she hasn't strayed to far from her beginning musical roots. I highly recomend this cd to any of her newer or younger listeners. You will not be disapointed. I especially like the songs, Like a Prayer and Oh Father. Review ID: 10000000007327711 Was this review helpful? Report this review I have actually bought this album a few times because of either losing it and missing it so much, or having it stolen. A few "radio" favorites are on this album, but it is the other tunes that make it such a hit in my book. One song is like a happy carnival song that just makes you smile when you hear it. Then there are the ones that make you almost cry because of the meanings behind the music. I recommend this album if you like Madonna's earlier music (not back at the very beginning, but earlier then Evita) I absolutly love it!! Review ID: 10000000006386182 Was this review helpful? This Bigger then life album, Like A Prayer, paraded Madonna full force into the global marketplace with a million dollar plus paycheck for a Pepsi commercial, a burning cross stigmata video with interracial love and a crazy Lilly Munster hairdo. All this makes you wonder if Madonna is an artist or just Madonna Inc., with a new model released every year. The songs are more pop sensations with little meaning, just the way we like them. The songs become overshadowed by Madonna's ability to lose touch with reality. Crotch grabbing, religious blasphemy and other over zealous self-worship made Madonna an even bigger contender. Her 4th album of all new songs was said to be in need of some prayers when it was released but Madonna proved everyone wrong again- she was still no new flavor of the month. In fact she was the hottest artist around and she was only getting bigger. The songs that exemplify that on this album are Express Yourself, Like A Prayer and Keep it Together. Memories of Like Prayer are better than the real thing. It doesn't hold up well today but back in 1989, we could't wait for it's release. The album smelled like patchouli when you bought it and Madonna's face was no where to be seen on the cover, which said alot about her already iconic status. Who knew that this album was an end of an era for Madonna? She has remained topical ever since but this was her peak, she jumped the shark and she supposedly never looked back.
