Lighthouse by Eugenia Price (1991, Paperback, Reissue)

If you enjoy historical romances that are well written - not the formula types out there today - with an original style and as much history as fiction then you'll enjoy reading Eugenia Price's novels. It's interesting how she can make you feel as though she were part of the Antebellum South, when sher's origninally from the Midwest (perhaps a previous lifetime?) she seems to know so much of the way of life and personality types, without being stereotypical. I especially like how the characters come to disapprove of - or at lest question - slavery, despite being brought up in a time an place where this was part of everyday life. These being reomances, there are love scenes, but they have an old fashioned quality, not the porn fest you get with most romances today. Also, many of the characters are based on actual people, so you're getting biography as well as history as well as a good historical novel. Her books aren't short (most are over 500 pages) but you'll finnd the extra time is worth it, for the substance that's sadly lacking in most romance novels today.
