Important film on the IMF's failings in Jamaica
Review created: 09/21/06

The film is narrated by former Jamaican Prime Minister Mike Manley and other figures, including IMF spokesmen. Shows the destruction of the dairy industry and other agriculture in Jamaica due to the IMF reforms forced on the Jamaica government. Provides important economic information and a case example of the failure involved with Free Trade Zones. Still relevant film as it was recently made in 2002.

Rather lengthy, but a good film to show in the classroom for a Social Science/Globalization course.

This documentary is an absolute must see for anyone interested in Jamaican culture and/or the far reaching effects of modern economic policies on the developed and developing world. Although specifically about Jamaica, the information contained herein applies to all the various nations in the world have been systematically and economically oppressed by the World Bank, the who IMF, and other nefarious organizations of a similar ilk.
Less than half of the story has ever been told when it comes the impoverished and under-educated citizens of Jamaica, the Caribbean, Africa, Central and South America, and other under developed European, Scandanavian, Middle Eastern, Asian, Oceanic, Malaysian, and Indonesian countries of the world.
I may not agree with every aspect of this documentary, or the implicit view points of many of the people interviewed (for example the rather forgiving interview with former Jamaican prime minister Manley), but opinions aside, Life and Debt is an incredible viewing experience.

  An inconvenient truth?
Review created: 04/06/09

When a poor developing country, like Jamaica, (the subject of this daring documentary) borrows money from western banks to finance her infra-structures and other projects, she normally has the intention to pay back via her natural resources and various trades; however, bad things happen (such as mismanagement, corruption within or whatever) that eventually incapacitate that country to repay the huge loans. So now, enter the supposed saviors (World Bank/IMF)...and that's the time when push comes to shove? But how and why? Well, come and see this incisive film and gain some eye-opening ideas--and perhaps a few fair, compassionate views.
