Another top-notch thriller from Dean Koontz!

On the night of his birth, Jimmy Tock's grandfather predicts there will be five days in the future in which something bad will happen to his grandson Jimmy. He even lists the dates of those five bad days.

Years later, armed with the knowledge of when these five bad days will occur, Jimmy tries to prepare and prevent the bad things from happening.

With this simple premise, Dean Koontz has already hooked us from the beginning. Readers willbe curious as to what will happen on those bad days and whether or not Jimmy is successful in preventing any bad things from happening.

Oh, and by the way, the bad things that may or may not occur on those five bad days are not random, but rather they are related to each other and tie neatly into what happened on the the night of Jimmy's birth. All of this leads to great and satisfying conclusion, as can only be told by the master storyteller Dean Koontz.

Readers who enjoy a good thriller should definitely rush out and buy this book.

I enjoyed the book from start to finish. A book you just can't put down. I really like reading Stephen King's novels and this is one of his best.

  My favorite Koontz book

Unique, even for Dean Koontz. Skirts the borders of comedy as well as horror with characters whose optimism and love of life and family make this not only a fun but an uplifting read.

  Time is running out . . .

. . . for Jimmy Tock, the reluctant and adorable hero of this book. Readers will fall in love with Jimmy and his unconventional family, who look at life with insight, humor, and a great deal of trepidation as five darkly predicted dates loom closer and closer. Just when you think you have everything figured out, Koontz pulls the rug out from under his readers yet again, leaving us gasping in shock, horror, or laughter. There is no other writer that can make me shiver and sputter at the same time.

life expectancy short lived for koontz
Review created: 11/17/05

Koontz is usually able to command interest and readability, but that was not the case this time. The book is so far fetched it makes it impossible to feel for the characters. Koontz still writes fluently enough and with enough mystery to keep you wanting more, but with each new discovery, I found myself wondering why I kept reading. Recommendation: life's too short to read this book.
