Lick It Up [Remaster] by Kiss (CD, Sep-1998, Mercury)

Beginning with this album, KISS enjoyed a steady journey upward to reclaim their heavy metal crown. They may have never reached those heights again, but at least they made money, and they reclaimed some respect that they lost from 1980 to 1982.
Critics and some people that haven't really paid attention to KISS music state that the success was attributed to the fact that KISS removed the make-up. I disagree, because while it did create a minor buzz for about a week, the story fell out of the news pretty quick. The thing that kept the public's interest was the music. KISS had made a damn good album with Lick It Up.

OK, I'll get slagged for this but if you do slag me, you need to be honest about the record, not about Kiss. I saw Kiss back in 1977 on the Love Gun tour. I still have all of their records (even Asylum). Now that 30 years have passed, I look at the music for what it is. Up until 1978, Kiss was a very good rock band. But then came I Was Made For Loving You. The Elder. The Phantom. Larger than life. And (here's where you'll hate me Kiss fans) fame way beyond their talent. Face it, Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons have 2 main skills: Way too much confidence and a thirst for money and fame. Every single record of the 80s, 90s and oughties is horrible. Don't get me started on Simmons Happy CD. Think of it this way: you are a record exec and some band comes in off the street in 2007. They all look like David Byrne and are selling you the Lick It Up Album as their first album. After you stop laughing, you kick them to the curb and say NEXT. That is my point. This is not music but part of the Kiss legacy. Even the album title conjures up visions of their video with Stanley mouthing Lick It Up and Simmons posing/pouting to the side. This is a really bad record that today's garage bands would crush with their creativity and talent. But hey, pick up Dressed To Kill, Kiss, Rock & Roll Over, Alive, Destroyer if you want Kiss music. If you want to give Kiss money for nothing, buy Lick It Up.

The album Lick it up pure 80's and pure Kiss minus Ace and Peter . Lick it up became one of Kiss's biggest hits of the 80's. Almost every track on this album is a hit that Kiss fans will know word for word. YOU NEED THIS ALBUM TO COMPLETE YOUR LIFE.

Kiss's first album without makeup. To start off the best songs on this CD are...wait there are good songs on this CD?! By far their worst studio album ever. Only worth buying to complete your album collection.

A remastered version of the original 1983 analog LP release AND it has all the right recording "flaws" that you actually want to hear! Though KISS is always much better live, this was the album that set the tone for their success in the 1980s, followed impressively by 'Animalize'...Vinnie Vincent was a great lead guitarist; Bruce Kulick was waiting in the wings ready to take the band to heights unimaginable before.
Their concerts in the mid-80s were fiery, bombastic and colorful and they did it without makeup. Either style is just fine for this KISSfan! From my first KISS concert in August 1977 to their NEXT reunion tour, nothing comes close to KISS Alive!!!
