The X5150 A Good Multi-function Printer for Single User

The Lexmark X5150 offers solid multi-function features for those who need the basics. Unlike some earlier model Lexmarks, the printer drivers for the X5150 are solid and work well. One of the nicest features of the X5150 is the abillity to use the copy function while the PC it is attached to is off.

Pros

+ Vertical Loading - Largely Jam Free
+ Simple Controls and Good Menu Prompts
+ Fast Draft Speed of 19 Pages Per Minute
+ Copy Function Works with PC Off

Cons

- SLOW High-resolution Color Printing
- Paper Sometimes Skews Diagonally
- Expensive Ink
- Large Footprint
- No Networking Support

Other Considerations

Many small businesses, home offices and even homes are good candidates for sharing a printer via built-in network functions/ports. WARNING: Sharing a multifunction USB printer via the workstation it is attached to will USUALLY lead to problems and/or not being able to use all of its functions (scanner, fax, etc.) by all workstations. If you want to use a multifunction printer as part of a network, you should make sure and get one that has built-in networking via Ethernet (10Base-t) and/or Wireless (802.11x). You should also check to make sure that functions like scanning are supported in a network configuration.

Summary

The Lexmark X5150 is a decent multi-function device for the individual home/home-office user who has low-volume needs. Those desiring faster output or network functionality should look at newer models from vendors like HP.

Good All-In-One Printer for eBay Sellers
Review created: 09/11/06

My husband bought my X5150 for Christmas gift 2 or 3 years ago. It has been the perfect machine for my eBay business. I do a large amount of printing - receipts, invoices, postage, packing slips and the like. I used the black & white quick print for most of my needs. This saves time and precious ink. The pages print very quickly on "quick print", the paper rarely jams and I can change settings easily.

The scanner is what I love the best. Having the flat scanner has been a real time saver. Not only can you scan pictures or documents easily into your computer, but I use my scanner when I'm selling books, CDs, videos and the like on eBay. No more taking pictures of small items. Just place them on the bed of the scanner and boom - you're done.

The 2 points that keep me from giving this all-in-one a perfect score of 5:
1) The ink cartridges are expensive (and difficult to find out how to recycle, unlike HP cartridges);
2) The photo printing quality is less than ideal. The all-in-one comes equiped with a photo editor, which is easy to use, but the color quality of the prints is far from great - possibly even stinks. Fortunately I don't need this feature for my business, but it would be nice for personal use.

All-in-all, this is a very good printer for your eBay business.

Excellent for a basic home office/student user.

I have had the Lexmark X5150 for a little over 2 years now. Since I bought the item, I have had absolutely no problems with it. I mostly use it to print out receipts/collection notices for my job, a good amount of photo printing, and day to day printing projects. My son, who is a student in high school uses it all the time to print out his school work. A few good things about the X5150 is that it can be used without a computer, choose which programs to run for the scan/fax buttons, easy access to the print cartridges, large paper capacity, and relatively fast print out speeds. The only con I can think of is that photo printing is not the best. Overall, its a durable and long lasting superior all in one machine.

My unit fried its contacts to the color cartridge. The unit is only two years old. What did it? Who knows, maybe it was the fact that the cartridge was a refill. (The refill had been in use for over a month.) Tech support says it would cost too much to repair. I do not know if my experience is unique or if others have had their unit burn it's contacts to the cartridge. In my opinion, it is an engineering/design flaw. The contacts carry too much voltage to be only a few thousands of an inch apart. (Judging from the amount of slag and number of traces burnt.) As for "Why did I decide to buy it?" I didn't - it was a gift.

I really love my x5150! I watched the presentation on HSN and the Today's Special price was great! I've had mine for over 3.5 years and basically no problems. The flatbed scanner has been great for my eBay items. It prints great quality photos, you have to change the settings but that's no problem.
I use inkjet refill kits and save lots on ink. I have no problem finding cartridges especially at Walmart, Sam's, Target, and office supply stores plus all of them have online stores. I joined an office supply's "club" and get free shipping on everything I order.
I strongly recommend this and other Lexmark printers. The ability to refill the cartridges easily and with no hassles(like contacting support as with other company's refill procedures) has me hooked on this brand.

Excellent printer and easy to use.

This is one of the few printer/scanner that can do a lot. You can scan you document and still be able to edit it with the Microsoft office word (if you have it installed) but make sure you have installation disc because it is not supported by Lexmark. I bought this printer/scanner in 2003 but lost the installation disc. It is good for windows XP. Imagine being able to scan a document that you don't have in your computer and still be able to edit it. I will recommend it to anybody that has windows XP and want to do more with the scanner. It has good print speed also.

  Still decent! Lexmark X5150
Review created: 10/05/08

Newer models have more features that's true, but this printer produces good quality prints at a pretty decent speed. I have been happy with it's performance. If I was writing this review 10 years ago I would be rating it "excellent" , but newer feature-rich models should get that, I think. The only drawback, and this is for all Lexmarks, is that OEM ink is very expensive! I circumvent that by buying inexpensive remanufactured ink cartridges here on Ebay! When my x5150 stopped fully loading the paper upon printing(after 8yrs of light duty), I found and bought the same model(on Ebay) so I would be able to use my extra ink cartridges. It's identical to my old one, so it's like my trusty x5150 never left. My results MAY not be typical because I was reading reviews on Amazon and many people had varying problems with their x5150s.

  Lexmark 5150

I received my 5150 about three years ago. I have had some paper jamming but the reason was my grandson dropped a pen in the printer, which I removed and had no more trouble with it.I now have to upgrade only because there is not drivers available for the all in one on line, when using Windows Vista. I have had great picture printing with it just chane the settings. The only thing I can see wrong with it is the cost of the ink. But Staples on line has decent prices for it.Walgreens Drug Store can refill the cartridges for very low price. I would recommend this printer to anyone who needs one for home use, just not with Vista.

On TV I have been seeing how to do pictures and things on T-shirts. That is one reason why I bought the scanner/printer. I can also take some old documents and scanned them to my computer. It is all in one machine that is what I like most about it. I just do not like the paper getting jam in the printer all the time.

This printer gets the job done but its not a good quality printer. It is not a great scanner and it prints like crap sometimes. Over all I do not like this printer, the only reason I bought because it was a good price of only 50 bucks!!! but I would not recommend this printer to anyone....

  Worked well then died

I was very happy with my refurbished x5150. Good price, handy, more than able to perform all I needed. Then one day it "lost" the color ink cartridge. I went to a printer forum website and found that this is pretty common. Lexmark support responded after about a week and a half and said I needed a new printer. I kept on with the black cartridge until a couple of days ago and the same thing happened. Very upsetting.
