Mr. Harris, with many like minded persons of intellect, humility and scientific examination, has long been an independent evaluator of thought and practice in the so-called advanced western world.
This book is a brilliant digest of his earlier work, "The End of Faith." Even the self-righteous narcisitic believers in their own importance [i.e. God watches me every second of my life because I'm so terribly important] will find it difficult to avoid his examination.
Granted, they will continue to attack his work without ever having read it; still, should they make the mistake of reading it -- their isolated, virtual world will be destroyed.

Some good has come from the practice of religion...

Although some good has come from the practice of religion, that is beside the point. It is so very obvious that the source of most of the world's misery is the practice of religion that leads to "my god is better than your god" style thinking and actions.

I can't state strongly enough that you should read this book - either to hear a familiar statement well said, or to annoy the Hell out of yourself listening to the arguments of the "other side."

Perhaps minds will not be changed by this book, but it certainly helped me feel more clear in my thoughts, and I will probably refer to it in future discussions of religion.

  An important book.

This is not a very well written book. It is a very important book to read, understand, think about, and talk about. Why the vast majority of people willingly accept the religious beliefs of some, while steadfastly rejecting others, with little or no effort to intelligently examine the validity of such beliefs, is shameful.

This book should be read by every American though those who are religious will probably condem it without examination. In this book, Mr. Harris makes a well stated argument against religion based on and endless amount of irrefutable evidence. Perhaps because of the internet's facilitation of the distrubition and exchange of information throughout the world community, people are finally waking up to fact that all religions are based on myths, have doctrines that are in conflict with reality, encourage animosity between people, and are dangerous. This book and Mr. Harris's other book "The End of faith" will help people see the light of reason and help them to free themselves from the chains of religion so that they will be able to live a fuller, more productive, and happier life.

  Fianlly...The Truth!!

This book is an excellent follow up to Sam Harris' previous book, "The End Of Faith." It is written in the form of a letter to Christians and is insightful, honest, and unapologetic. Sam Harris says what a lot of people feel but are too afraid to say. This would be an excellent gift for anyone, but especially for Christians. It will, perhaps, force them to deal with the violence and inconsistencies throughout the Bible.

I loved the book---it was so easy to read & succinct. I enjoy the fact that people other than myself have the same beliefs. I have often had a loss for words to talk about being an athiest & this book has helped me find lots of ways to describe it & the reasons behind it.
THANK YOU SAM HARRIS!!!!! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!

As a Christian, I was a bit skeptical before reading this book. However, I believe that the author brought many inconsistencies to light and offered a honest and fresh perspective. I would definitely recommend this book!

Like the book because it puts into question beliefs, religion, and especially Christian faith. Believe it is necessary to have discourses like this in order to perpetuate faith, answer questions, and fortify one's beliefs.

  "The End of Faith" Mini-Me
Review created: 02/04/07
by:

I bought Mr. Harris' "The End of Faith" and enjoyed the read so much that I wanted to see what else he had to say in "Letter to a Christian Nation". I had hoped that he would include in the text some of the letters he had received in response to the aforementioned book and then dissect them with new insights, but to my dismay the entire booklet was simply a summary of "The End of Faith" instead of a continuation. If you don't want to buy and read through the longer and more burdensome "The End of Faith", then this mini-book is for you. It's easy, and it gets the main point across without all of the lengthy discussions. If, however, you have read "The End of Faith", I would advise you to pass over "Letters" and seek interesting and fresh ideas elsewhere.
