  matured but more predictable
Review created: 07/31/08

As the Cowboys have evolved, they have slowly departed from the unpredictable time-changes that used to define this fine metal band. The rock here is more mid-tempo, with fewer infusions of speed metal. There are also more ballads. Some fans might find this a bit disappointing.

This is thinking man's metal. The Cowboys have a social conscience and ask pertinent spiritual questions. They make Christianity more accessible without being preachy.

In this release, they try to be more playful, which sometimes comes off ok but at others times is annoying. Their attempt at being more fun here is pretty much hit and miss, with the opener and Bucket of Chicken as prime examples of this same said effort.

Different Way is a psychadelic comparison of the Christian life with the secular. Life and Times is a good acoustic love song. Flag rails against rebellion for rebellion's sake, making protesting without alternative suggestions to be nonsensical. This song about social responsibility is blunt and sarcastic. Disney's Spinnin' rails against the misguided direction that society seems headed in, comparing how times have changed which is due, at least partly, to the media's influence. Another Hill is a ballad describing God's perseverance and faithfulness. Boom is a noisy instrumental amidst indistinct shouting. Interanlize is probably their best example of what they used to sound like, being the only heavy song with unpredictable time changes that used to be their staple. Future explores the timing of personal responsibility while Record Ends is a tongue in cheek apology for the cd's cessation.
