Album Notes Full performer name: Dorothy Love Coates & The Original Gospel Harmonettes. Personnel: Dorothy Love Coates, Mildred Miller Howard, Odessa Edwards, Wille Mae Newberry, Vera Kolb, Evelyn Starks Hardy, Herbert Pickard. One of gospel's greatest, along with Mahalia Jackson and Marion Williams, Dorothy Love Coates possesses a voice of almost frightening intensity, and it's heard to exceptional advantage on this well-chosen and well-annotated collection of her '50s work.. Although just about everything here is thrilling, particular standouts include "Sometime," in which she wails at her most powerful, the infectiously catchy "No Hiding Place" (familiar from the soundtrack to GHOST), and a killer version of the old gospel standard "Wade in the Water." There's also an amazing bonus track, a piano and organ jam between the group's two keyboard players (Evelyn Hardy and Herbect Pickard) that's so secular and bluesy that it threatens to turn into rock & roll before your very ears.
