Album Notes
Blending scrupulous musicianship with a superb technique, Erica Morini dazzled audiences for a good part of the 20th century. Many violinists, such as Anne Sophie Mutter, consider her to be "one of the greatest." Morini retired from the concert stage in 1976 and her recorded legacy dates mostly from before 1950; thus, the general public is largely unfamiliar with this great artist. This compilation of some of her best recordings, both studio and live, from 1921 to 1944 should go far in remedying this situation.
While Morini exhibits the full range of her prodigious technique in Wieniawski's showpiece concerto, her artistry shines even more brightly in the more exposed textures of the Mozart Sonata in B-flat, the Sarasate Romanza, and the Fritz Kreisler transcription of Gluck's haunting "Dance of the Blessed Spirits." In these pieces and throughout this recording, one will continually marvel at Morini's hallmark combination of impeccable intonation, luscious tone, intelligent musicianship, and unparalleled staccato playing.
