I am wondering if I didn't have an open mind, or if I was expecting too much maybe? I have read every Stephanie Plum book at least five times. I can't wait to buy them. With this book, I could put it down, and come back later, and not feel like I couldn't wait to see what happened next. I don't feel Janet Evanovich even wrote the book without a major ghostwriter helping. Stephanie was bland, Ranger all of a sudden is a talking guy who says "dude". Ranger and Joe are falling all overthemselves for Ms. Plum who shows no great emotional yearing for either one. Grandma has a potty mouth now. She has a boyfriend who mysteriously disappears into an assisted living and nothing else is said. (enough about the colostomy aspect). So many inconsistencies with the other books. Joe is always parked at Stephanie's. They were always at Joe's before. He doesn't have a washer or dryer, but he does in the other books. He cooks in this book, but in other books, his cooking skills run to toast and hot chocolate. In this book, Stephanie's mom's name is Helen. In all the other books, it is Ellen. The car at the end of the last book is a different car than this book. Her neighbor across the hall has always been Mr. Wolesky...now it is a different name. Albert, Vinnie, Valerie, the neighbors, the cop friends...all MIA. This book felt phoned in. I think Janet is writing so many books now, she is becoming another Nora Roberts. Just crank them out. So sad.........

I actually laugh out loud reading Janet's books. Her characters are hysterical!!! I mean wouldn't you just drop if your grandma wanted to buy a push-up bra and a thong? And the men don't get much sexier either. The flamethrower is a bit much, but hey it's different.

  Two Thumbs Up!

I was awaiting the release of Lean Mean Thirteen and I was not disappointed! I read the book in three days. I couldn't put it down. In this book, the reader really gets to know Stephanie's ex-husband, Dickie Orr. Up until this book, I didn't care too much for Dickie, but after reading 13, I found myself liking Dickie. The plot is full of Lula's crazy antics, Ranger's mysterious ways, and Morelli's sex appeal. A must read for any Stephanie Plum fan. You won't be disappointed! :)

Still the Funniest Mystery Writer Around
Review created: 07/06/07

Lean Mean Thirteen did not disappoint! I was smiling, chuckling, and occasionally laughing out loud at the antics of Stephanie Plum and the rest of the gang.

The 13th installment (15th if you count Visions of Sugar Plums and Plum Lovin') of the adventures of Jersey girl Stephanie Plum is incredibly good. The mystery, as always, is easy to figure out, but no one really reads these for the whodunnit. The characters are what make this series great!

Although the story could be read as a stand-alone novel, I highly recommend reading the series in order. One for the Money is the first novel in the series.

Where else are you going to read about exploding taxidermy? And who else could make such a thing funny?

Read it in one day--which brings me to my only complaint... Her books keep getting shorter!

Highly recommend for those needing a good laugh.

I pre-ordered this book so when it was released I wouldn't have to go to the store and look for it. I loved the idea that I could just wait for it to be delivered right to my and door. Also, I was able to purchase it for less than it would cost if I had gone out and bought it myself (even with the shipping it was still considerably less). Janet Evanovich is one of my favorite authors and I couldn't wait to receive this book. It was brand new when I received it.

Janet Evanovich does not know how to write a dull book. They are all great, witty, FUNNY and yet quick and light. The Stephanie Plum series is just nuts! A female bounty hunter who goes flying from disaster to disaster, wipes out a car a week, has the wackiest Grandmother ever, two of the sexiest men in the world - even the dog is weird but loveable!! #13 is just like 1 through 12!! Absolutely way too much fun. Congratulation on another hit, Janet - keep 'em coming!!

Janet Evanovich is one of my favorite writers. This is the 13th in the series. The characters are a riot and the story entertaining. Stephanie the bounty hunter is up to her usual hijinks and involves all the rest of the characters. This book features her ex husband Dickie and a crazy taxidermist. If you have never read this author, start at the beginning with One For The Money. You will be hooked!

I have read all of the Stephanie Plum books and this one was a real let down. I was really upset with the way the "F" word was used so much in this book. It really upset me. It's almost as if someone other than Janet Evanovich wrote the book. There was no suspense to it. You almost always knew was would be next. Perhaps a longer period of time needs to be between books for Ms. Evanovich so that she can collect her wits and write another Stephanie book that were up to the standards of books 1-12. Thirteen is definitely not a lucky number for her!!!!

It was like she took pieces of all the other books in this story line added the f word in between every other word and this made book 13 if it had not been for the taxidermy this book would have been a total bore

I can highly recommend this and all previous Janet Evanovich books. They are an addictive story line. Her , what I call, the "Number Series" of stories with titles like "One For The Money", Two For The Dough, "Three To Get Deadly" etc...are about a wonderful heroine, Stephanie Plum, who is pushed into the life of a bounty hunter, though ill prepared, and those who come to her aide. Also her "Full" series, ie." Full Bloom" etc. about other characters and their unusual encounters are just great. Ms. Evanovich writes to folks who like a fun and thrilling read that is not so detailed that you need an interpreter. Her stories are well suited to young teens and seasoned adults. They carry enough intrigue and inuendo to be interesting, but are not too gory or smutty. My teenage daughter has inhaled these series and Ms. Evanovich just can't keep up with her appetite for more.
Another author that has won the heart of my daughter is Harlan Cobin....He has a mystery series that she has also consumed and waits impatiently for more.

Love the Stephanie Plum series. Couldn't wait to read this, but feel like something's missing. It's laugh-out-loud funny, as always, but, I think, this is the first one I've read that didn't include Vinnie, Valerie, Albert, and the nieces, especially, the one that thinks she's a horse! Gramma is hilarious and out does being outrageous. I little surprised at Gramma's language in this one. Not that the words are used a lot anymore, but we don't usually hear them from her. The story is great, which is what I expect, so I wasn't disappointed with that. First book I can't rate as Excellent from Evanovich's Plum series. Wish I could. Glad I didn't pay $27.95.

  LEAN MEAN THIRTEEN
Review created: 08/10/09

Stephanie Plum is reunited yet again with her lawyer ex-husband, Dickie Orr, while doing a favour for Ranger. When Dickie is later discovered missing from his apartment under some rather violent circumstances, Stephanie becomes the prime suspect in his apparent murder.

While trying to prove her innocence she and Ranger uncover Dickie's ties to the partners in his law firm, who appear to be involved in everything from money laundering to drug running. Dickie's business partner believes that Stephanie holds the 'key' to the missing 40 million dollars missing from the law firm. Stephanie meets some interesting characters, from a taxidermist who is living at home waiting for the cable company with a penchant for bombs to a grave-robber who also does taxes in the back of his truck.
