There are many, many Reinhardt collections available, and his music really doesn't all sound the same. The later material is certainly as interesting as his early work-equally good and just as fascinating, both in terms of composing a musical picture of Reinhardt and just for sheer enjoyment and variety of listening. But Reinhardt made his mark with the Quintet, the string band concept, and with the effervescent Stephane Grapelli at his side. This collection of tunes from the Quintet of the Hot Club of France's heyday in the mid-'30s can officially be labeled "the good stuff."
The Quintet is definitive in the same way as Charlie Christian's recordings with Benny Goodman. You can feel the energy unleashed as a unique set of talents converges around a new idea of what an ensemble could be. Repertoire was, of course, a big part of the Quintet's sound. The formidable originals "Tears," "Mystery Pacific," "Minor Swing," "Swing Guitars," and "Djangology" are all here, as are such signature tunes as "The Sheik of Araby" and "Viper's Dream." Reinhardt recorded some of these tunes repeatedly throughout his career. But, for many listeners, these Quintet versions remain consummate.
