While the Switches' swaggering first single, "Drama Queen," possesses a mile-wide hook out of the ELO playbook and the luster and lyrical bent of Bowie and T. Rex, the well-coiffed British foursome should not be mistaken for a one-note glam-rock band. After opening on a rousing key with "Drama Queen," the Switches, led by fiery singer-songwriter Matt Bishop, proceed to careen Blur-style from one musical landscape to the next on 2008's LAY DOWN THE LAW. Producer Rob Schnapf (Elliott Smith, the Vines) helms, and his skills combined with Bishop's keen knack for melody and singalong choruses result in an appealing debut sneakily based in power pop, but adorned with all sorts of gaudy surprises.
