An inventive plot and wonderful performances make this Alec Guiness classic a cut above other bank heist films. As in other Guiness pictures, the humor is biting, though never overplayed.
The film deals with a plot to hijack a shipment of gold bullion, with inevitable complications. Guiness is superb as the lowly clerk who initiates the scheme. And plot twists, chase scenes, and high humor keep things moving along briskly without a false or unnecessary move.
For this film, Alec Guiness was nominated for Best Actor, and T.E.B. Clarke won the Best Screenplay Oscar. Watch for a brief walk-on by a very young Audrey Hepburn.
A delightful film. One of those you will find yourself watching over again, making it an excellent choice to add to your DVD library.
