Laura
Anyone who has loved the "Laura" books as a child, will love this book. It is a candid story of a remarkable woman who lived during extraordinary times and saw extraordinary events. The author separates the rosiness that is so appealing for children, from the reality of life that adults will relate to. What is shown is the contrast between a happy and safe life to the reality of illness, poverty, and uncertainty. Laura's life was not without sorrow, and unlike her books, didn't always have happy fixes or endings. It gives insight into her character and life, neither of which was perfect, yet like Ma and Pa, she makes the best of situations. In fact, the underlying optimism of Laura and family should be models for all of us today. The book also gives a historical perspective of family life during that time.
