Album Notes Louis Armstrong & His Orchestra includes: Louis Armstrong (trumpet, vocals); Edgar Sampson (alto saxophone, violin); Louis Jordan, Arthur Davey (alto saxophone); Ellsworth Blake, Elmer Williams (tenor saxophone); Louis Bacon, Louis Hunt, Billy Hicks (trumpet); Keg Johnson, Charlie Green (trombone); Elmer James (tuba, bass); Ed Hayes (tuba); Albert "Bud" Johnson (clairinet, tenor saxophone, vocals); Teddy Wilson, Wesley Robinson (piano); John Trueheart (guitar); Mike McKendrick (banjo, guitar); Bill Oldham (bass, trombone, tuba); Chick Webb, Benny Hill (drums); Mezz Mezzrow (bells). Recorded in Camden, New Jersey on December 8 and 21, 1932; Chicago, Illinois on January 26-28, April 24 and 26, 1933. Includes liner notes by Joe Muranyi. This single-CD, unlike the more comprehensive Classics series, has just some of the highlights from Louis Armstrong's Victor recordings of 1932-33. The backup big band generally sounds underrehearsed and occasionally out-of-tune but Armstrong is the dominant star anyway. Although not of the consistent high level of Louis' 1929-31 orchestra records, there are quite a few gems on this set including the touching "That's My Home," "I've Got the World on a String," "Hustlin' and Bustlin' for Baby," remakes of "Basin Street Blues," "Mahogany Hall Stomp" and "St. Louis Blues," and the somewhat bizarre "Laughin' Louie." In addition there are two three-song medleys of "Armstrong Hits." This CD is worth picking up by those not already owning the Classics releases although it is advisable to get Louis Armstrong's earlier Columbia CD's first. ~ Scott Yanow
