This is a gift for my kids. I saw it many years ago and fell in love then. My kids saw parts on youtube and now they are crazy to see it. What a surpise they will get on Christmas morning when they finaly get their wish! This movie is very touching. It shows how emotions can affect your life and how you are happy yet sad at the same time. For an older child (mine is 10) who is begining to learn sacrafice for the happieness of others who can't do for themselves (such as younger siblings) it shows how although you lost in one way you gain so much more in another. GREAT MOVIE!

I have 2 daughters and this movie is one of their favorite movies. They used to watch it on vhs all the time when they were little. One day we were walking through the store and my oldest daughter saw it on the shelf and said she remembered how much she liked when she was little. I bought it as a surprise, they are now 14 and 16 and still got excited when it arrived in the mail.

  The Last Unicorn - spoilers!!!
Review created: 04/22/07(updated 04/22/07)

The Last Unicorn is and always has been one of my favorite movies of all time! If you love unicorns - you can't pass up this animated movie about the last unicorn.

The movie starts out: a unicorn standing in the middle of the woods, wondering is she the last? What has happened to the rest of the unicorn - surely she cannot be the LAST. The unicorn learns from a butterfly that a powerful force known as the Red Bull has herded all the unicorns to the ends of the earth. She searches out to find other unicorn, but to her dismay she is captured and put on display in a freak circus - however mortal men cannot see the magical horn (they see unicorns as horses or mares), so of course there is magic involved. She escapes with the help of a friendly incompetent magician and starts her journey again. Other characters join later. When the unicorn reaches the castle of King Haggard, supposed keeper of the Red Bull she has an encounter with the Red Bull and she learns she cannot combat him, however Schmendrick (the magician) at the last moment changes the unicorn into a human to protect her. In human form, the Red Bull is not interested in her and leaves.

Schmendrick, Molly (another character), and the strange young woman go to King Haggard's castle (which of course is at the ends of the earth) and seek entry so they can possibly learn more. The new human formed unicorn is introduced to the King as Lady Amalthea. The magician tries to find a way to stay with the King, as the only occupants in the castle are the King and his adopted son Prince Lir. The King, for dark and mysterious reasons of his own lets them stay, replacing his competent on-call wizard with Schmendrick, and setting Molly to work in the kitchen. Gradually forgetting who she was, Amalthea (the unicorn) becomes more and more human with each day passing, and falls in love with the Prince. In a mixed complexity of fate and feelings, she must struggle with losing her immortal self even as she continues to find out what the King has done with the unicorns. It is later revealed that the King, having grown bored with almost everything that life has to offer, ordered the Red Bull to herd the unicorns of the world into the sea beside his castle. There he alone could watch his unicorns, the one thing that still gave him a measure of happiness.

In the end, Schmendrick, Molly, Lir, and Amalthea confront the Red Bull in his lair. Schmendrick reverses the spell, turning Amalthea back into the unicorn, but she does not want to leave Lir. The Bull drives her toward the ocean, as he drove all the other unicorns, but Lir comes between them and is killed. Grieving, the unicorn turns on the Bull and forces him into the sea. The other unicorns come out of the water, destroying Haggard's castle as they rush past; the unicorn restores Lir to life before she, too, returns to her home in the forest.

Little girls LOVE this movie! If you aren't a little girl and you have a fascination with unicorns, you won't be disappointed with this movie! Simply one of the best unicorn movies ever made!

  A childhood favourite!!
Review created: 03/27/07

This movie was a staple of my childhood! I enjoy the movie to this day and will often find myself watching it when I'm feeling "blue". It's a magical tale for any child or little girl with a horse/unicorn infatuation! It's a rare movie that showed me about imagination and courage. It is a must have for any fantasy lover, especially if you have a little girl!!!!

I am a true lover of Unicorns, but you don't have to be to enjoy this film. Great for the whole family and one of my personal favorites! Nothing the kids can't see or hear. In cartoon format for the little ones, some scary characters for the 7-10 year olds, a romantic story line for the adults, some reference to Robin Hood and fantacy for the young and old, and some of the humor is great for all!! I still find myself quoting the cat... "Purr...Purr...yes, that be nice". The boys won't appreciate it as much as the girls, but it's still a great movie with an unexpected ending.

The Last Unicorn was my favorite movie as a child. I'm 26 and mailed to my mom's address to male sure I got it. As soon as she saw it she called me and said "Haven't you seen this movie thousands of times?" hen this movie first came out it was on Beta. Of course the younger generations have no idea what that is. When I turned on the DVD it was great picture and sound. You would have never guessed it was as old as it. It brought back all the warm feelings I had when I first saw it. For anyone with kids, buy it. This movie is filled with underlining moral concepts that will over time come in handy. It is so beautiful. The story is one of weakness, hope, holding on, full range of human emotion, and more. I still cried when I saw it after about 10 years. This movie will inspire you or your child and fill your heart with love.

I bought this movie because I absolutely LOVE unicorns and the storyline is so beautiful- and the plot is only completmented by the lovely images in each scene. Those who enjoy Japanese animation, anime, will just flip over this movie. The images are so life life, but still maintain that cartoon edge. This is a MUST to anyone's collection.

A movie to remind us to believe
Review created: 12/16/06

I absolutely, without a doubt, LOVE this movie. I cried and hoped and wished that Unicorns really existed. I know, it's a little like believing in Santa Claus or the Easter Bunny, but oh well. As for the 'Disappointed' review I read earlier, I am dismayed by it and I wonder how someone could write such a horrible, close-minded, cynical thing about a truly beautiful movie, it is beyond me. It almost seems as though they were trying to impress someone.
Honestly, this movie is not about being a blockbuster, it's a novel that plunges into the little child in all of us. The dream that Unicorns are real, is something that lives in all of us, whether we want to admit or not.

SO THERE!!!

I have always wanted the movie. I watched it growing up and it is one of the best stories. I really draws you into the lives of the characters. And it really gived you the feeling of being in a fairy tale. The music is probably the best part of the film.

One Rare and Wonderful Movie to Keep and Treasure
Review created: 10/08/06

This is one of those rare and wonderful movies you will never want to part with. It's charming animation and hauntingly beautiful melodies will enchant you and your children for generations to come. I have purchased several copies of this over the years, and have my own personal copy away from the rest of the children's for safe keeping, which isn't like me at all! That's how good it is! If you like Unicorns you'll love this movie and sharing it with others. Me and My sister went to this together when it first came out quite a few years ago, at the theatre, even tho we weren't even stll close to being children, and thoroughly enjoyed it! it's one of those that everyone enjoys no matter how old or young. My 1 year granddaughter actually watches large parts of it and is enthralled by some of the music. So this is definitely a two thumbs up movie!
