LOD is pretty much what you would expect from games that are released for upcoming movies. They have potential but always seem to fall way short. Maybe it's because the limited time involved in getting a good solid game released before a movie is released is just not possible. Most gamers have come to expect delays in release dates due to unexpected game issues, but with these types of games, there is no pushing the release date back. Which generally leads to a buggy or unpolished product.
LOD main charater you play is Jack, a farmer. The game starts out with you deciding to check out the "stranger" standing in your back yard. Here's where the game starts to slide. After the encounter where you find out the stranger is going to trying and kill you, get this lol, you have to make your way up to the attic to get your varmit rifle and ammo! I'm sorry I have know farmers all my life and they don't keep thier rifles in the attic in a chest. Okay will let this slide but what happens next is a problem that will plague you through the whole game. After making your way back outside to confront the "stranger" you find out just how bad the targeting controls and hit points are in this game. Unless you have been hiding in a closet any zombie fan knows a shot to the head makes a dead zombie really dead. In this game head shots may or may not put the zombie down and being you are only given a few bullets to start with, the problem gets compounded when a few of the "strangers" zombie friend show up to join the party! Anyway after getting this mess taken care of you decide to check on the nieghbors by cutting across the cornfields to thier house in the dark, yeah right. It's after this first level which I guess is to get you familar with the combat system or lack of it is when you hear an radio annoucement about a "safe" place in the nearby city called Fiddlers Green so Jack decides to take a hop to the city in his 4x4. Call me a purist but in most zombie infestations people are trying to flee the city right? But being LOD is time set a little before the movie I guess this is okay.
LOD had the potential to be a zombie game on the same caliber as the Resident Evil series 1-3 and Outbreak games. But poor controls and some really stupid game level objectives will leave you scratching your head saying "what was the point of this level again?". The biggest problem of this whole game is it's based on Mr Romero zombie movies, which any fan of Georges movies (yes I'm one) knows once you have been bitten your history, no if's ands or buts. Unlike the Resident Evil series where there is no such predetermined death sentence from being bitten, in any game based on a George Romero zombie movie thats a hard suspension of disbelief to maintain. I feel this problem could have been addressed in the game design(like better aiming controls/accurate hit points and better level design) then having Jack hunt for miracle healing pills ala Resident Evil to keep him from joining the ranks of the walking dead.
Okay after reading this review you may ask "why did I give it an average rating?" Well for one true zombie games are rare, after Capcom decided to change Resident Evil series from true zombies to alien infected humans, the zombie game landscape is pretty bleak. Two there are some mods out there now, plus I do believe there is a group of people working on a new super mod for this game that may breath new life into LOD and make it the game it should have been all along
