LAMA RABI RABI, the fourth album by Japanese psych-folk band Ghost, is often under-appreciated and underrated, despite representing a key point in the band's evolution. Leader and guitarist Masaki Batoh continued to harness his passion for Tibetan culture by mining both Eastern and Western folk traditions, transforming them both with bits of rock and psychedelic edge. Here, both the softer acoustic sides and the heavier electric sides of Ghost have a turn. Beginning with a wonderful cosmic drone on "Mastillah," the song floats along, picking up flute accents and percussion while creating a steady rhythm that continues through the next few tracks. Things pick up a bit on "Mex Square Blue," a hippie-fried banjo, flute, and drum jam; and "Bad Bone,"a distorted blues-soaked dirge that features Batoh's more gravelly voice. From bagpipe to musical saw ("My Hump is a Shell"), LAMA RABI RABI showcases all of Ghost's psychedelic trappings in gently subtle moments and soupy jams, making it an essential release in the band's catalog.
