Album Notes Additional personnel: Dennis Budimir, James Moody, James Morrison , Alex Acuna, Brian Bromberg. Lalo Schifrin is best known for scoring film and television, but his first love has always been straightforward jazz. 2007's LALO SCHIFRIN & FRIENDS finds the composer celebrating his 75th birthday by getting together with some fellow musicians in an acoustic jazz setting and cutting loose on a set of material written and/or arranged by Schifrin himself. The style leans towards traditional hard bop, but there's no mistaking the composer's sophistication with charts as the various instruments shift and glide through the song structures perfectly. There's plenty of hot improvising as well, however, giving the set a vital, fun feel.
Editorial Reviews The exceptional level of chops here, and the impeccable craftsmanship of Schifrin's compositions and arrangements, make this album feel like a rare jazz recording without a single wrong note. JazzTimes
4 stars out of 5 -- Here, with colleagues of similarly iron-clad credentials he eases through nine numbers which swing as effortlessly as a cat leaping a fence. Uncut
