Movie Description
Alfred Hitchcock weaves a knotty yarn of intrigue in these two classic mysteries. THE LADY VANISHES finds a spoiled woman of leisure, Iris Henderson (Margaret Lockwood), wrapping up a ski vacation. In the hotel, she meets the elderly Miss Froy (Dame May Witty), as well as an unbearably rude music scholar named Gilbert (Michael Redgrave). Just before boarding a train headed home, Iris hits her head and Miss Froy takes her under her protective wing. When she awakes, Miss Froy is nowhere to be found, and none of the train's passengers recall ever seeing her. As her search seems futile, Iris suspects she may be losing her mind. JUNO AND THE PAYCOCK is based on Sean O'Casey's smash hit stage play about a hard luck Irish family with an insipidly optimistic father who holds out hope even as the family tragically disintegrates. A blend of humor and tragedy, the poignant story follows the family during the Dublin uprising. Falsely believing that they are about to inherit a fortune, the family becomes unhinged. Beautifully photographed, this lesser-known Hitchcock film establishes many of the director's trademark uses of sound.
